You are planning to keep the AWD correct?

How do you plan on adapting the LS1 to the 6spd transmission? I am not aware of any adapter kits. This seems to be a fairly complicated thing to design properly.

I would think getting the engine and transmission joined together, then installing the drivetrain into the car before building engine mounts would make sense.

caddy , you are correct ; the trans is infront of the engine. and the trans is designed to turn and run that way ( with the engine facing backwards). if you used an audi trans you would end up with a 6 speed reverse tranny

the audi setup wirks in a mid engine configuration where the engine is infront of the trans .

basic , kennedy makes a conversion for that , as well as another company in australia .

the proper way to do things is like you described , but since i am not known for being proper and i don't have the trans yet , i won't do the mounts ( or at least tack weld them to where they supposedly might be ) untill i do get one .

Have you thought about making it a mid engine car? stick the motor in the back seat area?

carson, too much work to do so .

any how , got some work done last time :

took the bar that was attatched to the stock porsche mounts off as well as the mounts . i then started the other cradel by bolting in these plates inplace of the original mounts :

Size: 153.4 KB

i then welded a nut to each end of the "u" :

Name: 100_1953.jpg
Views: 979
Size: 170.2 KB

and drilled the plates so i can attatch the two peices like this :

Name: 100_1954.jpg
Views: 1006
Size: 141.8 KB

i also notched the two tubes going front to back , i just need to weld them on .

the block hugger headers came in too, and i'm not diggin'em
they exit right at where i want to run the bars holding the pedestals :

Name: 100_1949.jpg
Views: 955
Size: 158.1 KB

so i guess i'll just have to wait till i get the vette shorty headers in . they angle rearwards ( or forwards ) and away from the bars .
and on a side note , i found out that i can run two bullets horizontally on top of each other in the space where the original muffler sits all while maintaining the proper exit location for the tips , which gives more room inside the engine compartment or atleast a better chance to quite down the engine .

a little progress to report

got the other cradle (v1.1) kinda done
i first had to get two "L" bends to form the pedestals, then instead of notching them i drilled a hole on the ends and cut through the hole : (looks like the professor charachter on the muppet show )

Name: 100_1955.jpg
Views: 962
Size: 165.1 KB

then i placed the L on to the main hoop and tacked it on :

Name: 100_1956.jpg
Views: 987
Size: 176.1 KB

i plan on welding the other bit that had cut off so it looks like the pipes go through each other , this way a have a mounting point for a two hook or the exhaust .

anyhow, here is how it looks when both sides are on there:

Name: 100_1961.jpg
Views: 965
Size: 150.8 KB

i then sliced the other ends of the pedestals at an angle so they sit flush on the motor plate:

Name: 100_1963.jpg
Views: 978
Size: 152.3 KB

Name: 100_1964.jpg
Views: 985
Size: 243.2 KB

everything is tacked on there , i need to fully weld those bars ( except the motor plate connection - that waits till i get a tranny) but i have to wait till i get the TIG welder back from a buddies shop .

after welding that , this version of the cradle will be almost done

i guess next up will be the V2.0 of the cradle, got everything cut and notched to fit , just need to weld it up when i get the time.

other than that , i started messing around with some wiring diagrams,,,, not fun

so as soon as i'm done with the camaro and the race in a week , and the vette headers come in , i should be back on track

i'm also thinking of using an MR2 electric powersteering pump ( just like in the Audi build thread here), this way i can run the ac compressor and alternator (using a BMR mount ) using belts , and keep the belts on a level below the rearmost crossmember or brace and run a remote EWP and the electric PS pump , this way i can pull the engine towards the rear a bit more ,,,, of course this all depends on the transmission ,,, which is not here
but its nice to have more options.

Andy,
Pretty cleaver. I likes. LOL. Do you have a build thread of your LSx powered Porche? I like the whole eng. trans craddle idea/pics.

Jim,

No build thread. Been meaning to start one, but I don't really have much time to devote to that. Maybe some day soon..........

1dirtyz,

In this new version cradle are you using the Porsche motor mounts or are you mounting the motor and it's cradle solid without rubber mounts? It's not quite clear (to me).

loool, it looks confusing now that i look back at it

the first version (V1.1) the plan was to use the porsche motor mounts only (frame to cradle ) and a solid connection from cradle to block . i started making it but then i thought i can make this better and i came up with the second cradle idea (V2.1) which uses a solid mount between the frame and the cradle as well as the cradle and suspension crossmember , and F-body mounts between the block and cradle .
so i started building the second version , untill i got to a point where i needed to have the headers on the cat to know where to weld stuff ......
soooo,,,, i couldn't stand waiting around for stuff to show up so i went back to the first design just to complete it ( well its more like to keep me occupied ).

so this way i have both cradles ready incase i have to use one or the other (in other words i hate waiting and have to keep myself busy )

Awesome project.

I don't think anyone could realistically get angry with you for doing this to a 996, I mean the car had an engine fire. You are basically giving it a new lease on life.

I like your reasoning

any how , i'm done for now with the getting ready for the race we had so its time to get busy here again

still no headers in , and no luck with finding a transmission locally. i'll give it one more week and then bite the bullet and order one

i did have the time to mess around with some wiring diagrams and now know what wires to look for .

so i guess its time to for another batch of orders which should include a transmission , adapter, axles, pedals, shifter, and cables. i'll try to source a wiring harness locally ( for the engine) , but if i don't find a good clean one , i'll go with one from the sponsors over here

More power to you.
Thank you for what you are doing to that car, your work, skills, and ambitions are just amazing. I know there are many 996 owners who love to get rid of their engines and have a V8 in there. If i were you, I would sale all the fabricated parts buy you and sale it as a conversion kit. I would buy one!
Keep going!

Thanks for the kind words !
funny that you mention that ,,,, for some reason when working on that car i keep telling myself keep it simple enough to replicate
you never know , if i finish this project and think i can replicate it i might just do it , i know i'm documenting everything i can for future refrence .

as for progress on the project , nothing to report today, just cleaned the garage up and removed the headlights to get them polished .

and i just got an email from summit saying the vette headers shipped out , so they should be here hopefully some time next week

and i should have the tig welder back in the garage tomorrow so i can finish the current cradle .

For anyone who is wanting to install an LS engine in either a Porsche or Audi I make the adapter kits to fit those engines and transmissions together.
eric@kitcarchassis.com

Take a look at the LS4 front accessories. They are shorter than the other LS engines and might be of some use.

Hopefully your cam won't be too big. Those solid mounts are gonna rattle your teeth out.
Is there a polyurethane you can cushion them with? With a 232/240 cam on my factory style mounts I can still feel every rotation of the crank. I've been in a few solid mounted dedicated track 911's with the h.o. Flat 6. We joked it made the little 3 liter feel like a ronchy V8. On the street it might get a little irratating. I am swapping out the factory style motor mounts for semi solid (Pm me if you want mine) now that the twins are getting fab'd in as well as a smaller cam. I just remembered you saying you were gonna run it around N/A first.
Nice progress.
