Default LS1 into 1st gen Camaro update

well the motor is in I moved it back and decided to place the steering in front of cross member. I now do not have to change the oil pan and placed the motor closer to firewall. When I first put it in with BRP mounts it was like 3" away from firewall and looked bad.. I now have about 1.5" from firewall and lots of room for long tube headers.. It is still months away from firing though. starting mini tub then new rear end then paint..

I have not decided on the steering yet.. A friend totaled his 99 Camaro so I may get the rack from him.. then see about fabing it all up myself. If that doeal does not come through I am thinking about BRP's but I need to research more on the different options.. I know a couple people that have had bump steer issues but now sure whos setup they used and I want to avoid this at all cost..

Bump steer issues were with the STEEROIDS rear mounted rack system..

I bought the rack kit from Phil and it looks like a real pain in the *** to install. It may not be as bad if you have the subframe out. If I had it to do over again I would have gone with a different subframe.

how is the quality of Phil's kit? I dont have a front end on the car so access to welding and or cutting is easy..

I think the quality of his kit is good. He states that its about a eight hour job if you have the frame of. I think its more like a few days if you are doing it for the first time.

I have photos of the installed BRP rack kit on my car's webpage, see the Chassis page at www.ExtremeG.net

Madman Racing here in Houston did the fab work on the subframe for me, it came out sweet! I sent the '00 Z28 steering rack to BRP and Phil modified the end links (shortened them).

Real nice car. I really like the wheels. How much did they charge you to do the fab work for the subframe? I want to compare it to what I've had quoted here.

Fab work, powdercoating, and assembly of the new suspension components cost around $750 total. Powdercoating was $300 of the price, I had all of the components done, including the subframe itself.

To keep things "simple," I will be retaining the rear-steer config when converting to an LS1. Check this site out: http://www.lnjstreetrods.com/projects/69_camaro/
It looks like the truck oil pan will clear the steering parts if the engine is moved rearward enough. Of course, Stainless Works headers won't work, but considering cost issues, custom headers/oil pan mods may be about the same $$ as a R&P conversion with less fab work required on my part.
