Default sending unit question

i am still trying to put a 6.0 in my 79 C10. My newest question is what are you guys, that are putting these motors in old cars, doing for your fuel sending unit? can you use the stock one or what? my stock one has 3 outlets and i think i only need 2 (out and return) right?

I am not sure I am flowing you. You aren't using the same gas tank/sending unit as before? Can you clearify?

OK. I think I know what you mean now. Are you running a intank fuel pump or inline fuelpump?

Can you run an inline pump that is fed by the sending unit? I thought that when running in-line setups you should use a fuel cell or add a sump to your stock tank and mount the pump slightly lower than the sump? This would negate the use for the sending unit other than working your fuel gauge and venting the tank the other lines would need to be capped.

Pretty sure that elec. pumps are not good a priming themselves and when plumbing them into the stock sending unit you can run the risk of running it with no gas supply and burn up the pump. Don't know for sure tho, I went with in-tank with a tank that has baffles to keep the pump in fuel as much as possible. Of course a 87 Monte Carlo has more tank options than a 79 truck so your only option may be to a sump or hope the pump lasts plumbed through the sending unit.

You should be able to go both way, but depending on how your drive .. There are pro's and con's of doing it either way. You should have at lease two lines in the sender.. Hopefully a 3/8" feed and a 5/16" return. You will also need to make sure you have some vent lines and/or EVAP lines.

As you and others have stated.. Inline does have it problems.. Just running an inline with the pickup could be very problematic and would not recommend it unless the tank has a sump in the rear for the pick to feed the inline pump. But then again.. Baffles are a must too. As you stop, accelerate and turn. It can cause fuel starvation problem and that is not good. An inline can be done, but you have to take into consideration all of the requirements to be a good setup.

One setup you can do is to use the Tanksinc setup. It allows you to modify your current tank with an intank setup. Many have used it and with good success. Other option are the costly Rock Valley and Rick's tanks.. For in tank pump setups and new stainless steel tanks.

IMO, for most setups. I would go with Intank... They offen and usually do last longer and offer less noise.

let us know what you decide on !

ok, i had no idea this was going to be this complicated. I have no idea what a sump or baffles in th gas tank are. I thought i could just run my inline walbro pump with a filter and regulator, through the stock sender and it would work. So now i guess what i need is for somebody to tell me the cheapest way to go (that works good) and how to do it. cause i have no idea how to sump a gas tank, or run an intank pump.

Many people have sump'd their tanks on this site and posted pics of what and how they did it. Do the 79s have the tall narrow tank that is behind the seat? A plastic fuel cell may be your best bet if you have a spot to mount a 10 gallon cube. Have you searched other swaps into similar chassis/body trucks? How did they do the fuel system?
