I have scored a 4.8L and 4l60e from a wrecked 2000 Sierra, got it basically for free since I parted the rest of the truck out for more than I had in it. Sent the computer off for reprogramming. I'm working on the motor mounts now but I should have those done and new pics shortly. 2012 edit, 4.8 went in my s10, now I have a nice low mile 5.3 for this truck.

Here are some older pictures from when I was going to use a turbo 4.3.

Wrong wheels, but this will be near ride height.

C4 front suspension.

Old motor.

2 year update, Lol, was sidetracked by Roadrunner turbo build, 98 camaro rebuild, s10 4.8 swap, garage work, etc. Now ready to get back to work on this project.

Very little progress, got mock up junk ls1 set in there, motor mounts made, starting on header build/modification. Started with ls1 block hugger headers. 1-5/8 primary tube, will be 3" collector.

The engine trans that will be going in this thing is now going to be a 5.3/4l60e from a 2000 silverado that I crashed a few months back. Eventually plan to build a 6.0 or larger N/A engine or supercharge the 5.3.

I'm watching. I just saw one of these trucks on craigslist a few days back and thought it would be a great LS swap candidate.

Tiny update, some more exhaust components arrived and work was cancelled due to snow, so I got the drivers side header mocked up. Took a picture and knocked it back apart for welding.

Hooker collectors, 1-5/8 primary x 3" and 10" long. Part number 11522, these were $34 for the pair and worth every penny.

4 O2 sensor bungs and 2 plugs, 2 for PCM and 2 for wide band, also 2- 3" v-bands.

And the mocked up header prior to welding. The primary tubes will be cut at an angle before the collector so it will have a little better merge properties than just a square cut.

Glad to see some interest in the M5.

I have another small update, just welding on the headers.

I don't have a lot of time on a tig welder, but they didn't turn out too bad.

This is what I was thinking of for a poor-mans merge. I would think this would be better than just an abrubt square cut. I have no way to test it, but I'm sure somebody will say its a bad idea. Oh well. Needs welded and blended but you get the point.

Both headers done finally, well close anyway, just a little aesthetic grinding is left before sending off for ceramic coating.

Figure I have close to 12 hours in the drivers side and 10 in the passenger side. 1-5/8" primaries, 3" collector. Do you think these hold me back from reaching 500 rwhp with a supercharged 5.3 or 5.7?

Got the 12617944 exhaust gaskets in and realized they aren't going to seal worth a damn against the hooker header flanges.

The gasket only hits about 1/2 of the sealing area.

Bought these off of ebay for $75. They fit the gaskets perfectly. 1/2" thick.

I should have the headers back from the ceramic coating later this week. Will post pictures then.

VEry good job on the headers. Better than I could do for sure. I do have one question though, why would you bother going with 1 5/8" primaries knowing it will hinder your future power levels? I could see if it was ALOT cheaper AND only takes a few hrs per side to fab. Then simply make new ones when and IF you go bigger later on.

Well in the beginning, I planned on just buying bluck hugger headers and running them as-is, wasn't too concerned with performance just wanted to get it on the road. But when the block huggers wouldn't clear anything and I needed to modify them, I just used the same primary size as the hooker block huggers.

Honestly, I don't think these will really hold me back much. I read a header test Here that basically concluded that the 1-5/8 headers had the same basic output as the 1-3/4 and 1-7/8 within a few horsepower and torque. The 1-5/8 actually made 1 more ft lb at peak, but lost 6 hp at peak, averages were almost identical. This was on a 400 hp ls1, so the 6.0 I'm building will be different but I don't think it will matter too much.

Anyway, here is a picture with them back from powder... err ceramic coating.

I hope you did not powder coat them and you meant cermic coating.

When welding up you flange, how did you keep them from warping?

In the past when I did headers I always ran into that issue. I am trying to avoid it with my custom long tubes in my Bimmer project.

Thanks in advance for any advice

PS: well done solution:
