A cell is little more than an aluminum box with some foam stuffed in it. And it is placed about a foot from the rear bumper. The gto tank is steel plus a plastic cover. And it will be placed about 4 feet from the rear bumper plus it will be over and between the rear axle. They both have roll over protection so that's not really an issue.

And not to mention it wasn't uncommon back in the day to put the fuel tank right behind the seats, like in my old Ford. The only real danger is maybe a rolloverfor it to spill into the passenger compartment. It would really take one hell of a hit to get into the tank, and while I know that anything is possible, I personally feel that the tank placement is in one of the safer locations.

Deffinately, in the 04-06 GTO's it's in the same location, and the passenger compartment is not sealed on those either... It's closed off more than the Chevelle, but it's not completely sealed... I think you'd do just fine with the tank there. It obviously passes the crash safety tests in the newer GTO....

Finally got my tank welded up. Decided to just go ahead and MIG it (don't to hard on my wells it was pretty much my first time). Still need to leak check the game and weld up any leaks then I am going to coat the inside and going to use a truck bed liner on the outside.
