Can't run a t56 in a 944 LS1 swap due to the rear transmission + torque tube setup. I have a 2nd gen RX7 L92 and an 83 944. the 944 interiors are ok, maybe a bit better than the rx7's but the cost is higher. 944 turbo trans are ok for power, but not cheap. A good condition 951 (944 turbo) transmisison with an LSD is easily over a grand. The 968 boxes are 6 speed and even more expensive.

I'm currently finishing up a gen 1 sbc into a 93 240sx swap. Its really easy, as far as wiring and install overall. I simply adapted a t56 to it. Might be a good budget option for you. I know this is an LSx forum, but parts tend to be much cheaper for the gen 1 small block.

also, with a little weight reduction i should weigh in at under 2800lbs.

The 240's trans tunnel has nearly enough room for the t56 as well, i only had to bang a few times with a hammer, and cut a few ears off the t56. Mounts are fairly cheap, and easy to make. I bought mine, but should have just made them for $75 or less. Depending on engine position, your shifter will even come straight up in the hole with a t56.

Mine is going to come in around $6000-7000 total. but that is a 400hp sbc, a t56, 100hp of nitrous, some good suspension (coilovers, rucas, tie rods, subframe bushings, etc.) and a well strengthened chassis( fender bracing, nismo power brace, strut tower braces, a rear end brace, and some under car frame bracing.
