Default harness question

okay, i searched but no one answered this for me. i have a 98 pcm and harness, but an 01 engine. I spoke with john at speartech and he said that it wouldnt be hard to use the two. just change the ect connector and your fine. i called PSI conversions (in jersey) and he said that using a 98 pcm and harness with an 01 engine, would be extremely difficult. everything connector wise fits. are the sensors on the 01 motor different resistance values than sensors on a 98 engine? what would make it difficult?

cuz than i'm stuck with a few options, just buy a harness and pcm with a tune on it for the 01 for ~600 bucks, or buy HP tuners (if it is neccessary to change a lot of things inside the pcm) for around 4-500, or send out my 98 pcm to get VATs disabled and hope for the best for around 150.

I always heard you couldn't use a 98 ECM on other year engine. I woyuld try calling Speartech again. Maybe he mis understood/misheard you.

Speartech is correct the 98 has a 3 wire temp sensor 01 has 2 wire. Using this in a swap is fine. If you did that in an F-body and wanted the gauges to work then you'd be out of luck.

Buy a PCM off ebay, already has VATS, emission's removed, for about 150 bucks, good enough tune to start your project. Repin your 98 harness to say a 99-02....get a new temp sensor, and add IATS. Use one of the many pin outs on here to complete this change over. Most you would be out is like 200 bucks.....

You can't use a 98 PCM on anything but a 98...OS is different, amongst other things. Good luck finding a PCM if it fails...

You said you have a '98 PCM and Harness.
It will work on a later model LS1 with no problem. Just the ECT that is different.
Sometimes the injector size, but that can be done in the program. Everything will work fine.

What makes it tough is if you had a 99 or later harness, and a 98 ECM, that's what people are saying is an issue.

thats what i thought, but this guy at psi conversions confused me. i may end up buying HP tuners because for me to get everything I need removed for the 700r4, i'm getting quoted 300 bucks by everyone ive tried including speartech

The engine doesnt care what year harness/PCM is controlling it. The biggest issue is making sure the PCM differences dont interfere with your harness pinout. 98 PCM to 98 harness is fine, 98 PCM to 99 harness is a problem

Id change the 2 wire CTS in your 01 engine out for one from a 98. The built in analog gauge sender is very nice to have

yeah i'm going to. already got that. just need to extend all my wires so they fit where i want the pcm, and than possibly may buy HP tuners as I need a lot of things changed and its only a few hundred more than getting someone else to do it (im considering doing more ls1 swaps)

Hey Nunan,

Im the guy from PSICONVERSION and was under the impression that you had a 2001 Engine and harness with a 98 PCM. In that case I recommended just going with a 2001 PCM and calling it a day because the pinout is different. Sorry for any confusion that you I may have caused you.
