Gotta say I love it. Nice to see a true do-it-yourselfer . I am partial to 70 Elcaminos and Chevelles for that matter. Definitely a thread I will be subscribing to. Keep up the good work.

I like the attention to detail with your harness. Keep the story coming.

I like it, however, I cringe to see a nice cam, TF heads, then an LS1 intake. Plan on upgrading it later?

Thanks that is one thing that i really want to look clean, I know that if it doesn't it will just be one of those things on the car that bugs me.

Yes i intend on upgrading it later, I had the intake before i found the deal on the heads and I am already stretching my budget a little thin to afford a better intake.

As I said in my last update, I had done my relocation of the power steering and the alternator

May be hard to tell, but the power steering moved up slightly so that the pulley would clear the steering box

On to this weekend,
For the old motor, the cheep gauges were sufficient in the hole for the radio, but I bought a new radio to fit there and would like something with a little more precision so they had to come out.

My plan was to remove the old sweep speedometer and replace it with a metal panel holding all my new gauges

To get the old speedo out I pretty much had to pull the whole dash off

Here was the start of what would hold my gauges, I spent far too long working on this, mathing it all out so that the distance between every gauge bezel would be exactly the same distance apart

With the holes cut

And with the new Autometer Ultra Lite II's and AEM wideband

Then I made the top plate and added some mounting tabs for the top, one more needs to be added to the bottom

And in position to locate the last tab

I still need to make a few filler pieces for the sides of it, add in the holes for the LED turn signal, high beams and check engine light, as well as welding, maybe some filler work to make it look nice, and then some paint

I continued working on my dash, the side filler pieces are on, and the edges were all filled. Here it is in primer

and in paint

It turns out that when i requested the quote from Keisler they sent me their standard fit transmission which is why i was having problems with my shifter hitting the dash. After some discussion with them they offered to modify it with their perfect fit mod at their own expense. So my motor and transmission came back out and got sent back to them.

With the motor out i took this time to clean the block up and paint it

I painted it with VHT Cast Iron engine paint

I will be painting the oil pan later, it needs some final tweaking to clear the steering

and with the heads unmasked

While i was painting the block i also cleaned the underhood area but none of the pictures really turned out well, it will get painted next time i have the chance to work on it

I also took the time to finish up my gauge panel.

Gauges installed

Initial wiring

Final wiring minus the LEDs

next will be finishing up the LEDs on that panel and painting the engine bay

My brother did some final tie rod clearancing of my oil pan so i painted it cast iron like the motor

Here are some picture to show how much was actually done to it

While i was doing that i was also working on painting the underhood

Since watching paint dry is not a very productive use of my time, i degreed my bellhouseing to meet the spec of my transmission, and installed my flywheel and clutch

Before the motor was installed i took the time to drill and tap the head for the temperature sensor for my gauge.

More updates to come later

Put the motor in and drilled the hole in my firewall for my wires to go though

Installed the intake and started connecting wires back to the appropriate sensors

Starting to string out all the different wires

Aluminum Pipe off my intake with the MAF sensor installed

Everything in the engine compartment is starting to look nice and neat
