So I haven't made a lot of project lately but I though I would post up a little side project that i have been working on.
A friend recently bought a new car, so I inherited his sub and amp that was in his truck.
The sub called for a .667 cubic foot sealed box, so the next step was to make the box fit behind the passenger seat. After probably three cardboard templates to try and get the dimensions right i got the inner structure of the box done.
This was then followed by making a top piece that fit nicely against the panel behind the door.
This was followed by the front that contoured to the floor
Here is how it sits, along with the potential amp location
With the sub installed and the amp mounted and wired
For just a single 10" it puts out extremely nice bass
And a close up of the amp wiring
The box then got wrapped with carpet
Brackets were made to mount it to the car, and the sub was re installed
In the next couple weeks Im hoping to make some pretty good headway to finish up pretty much everything i wanted to do for the winter

Well i had the week off school so i had some time to work on this.
the car came with about the weakest 10 bolt ever made so there was no way is was going to put a posi in it. So my brother got me a 12 bolt housing from a friend
I have never seen anything look that green after sand blasting
Ready for paint
Primed
Then I broke out the paint brush and put on a couple coats of Hardnose (its the stronger version of por 15)
Well that was drying i took out the old 10 bolt
I also took the time to box my control arms, which got painted along with the new backing plates for my rear disc brakes
I had to fight with the rear end to get wear pattern to somewhere that my brother seemed to find acceptable since i had never built a rear end before. It probably got taken apart 5 or 6 times before it was good.
Put on this rusty cover to give it another coat of paint. I have a new cover on the way.
Next is to put it in the car, and that's where i ran into even more problems, but that's for another post

So the rear end went into the car with no problems, but once the axels were in the problems started
Aftermarket axles
I was able to put them in, the but c clips would not go in.
Turns out they were about a half inch shorter then the ones that were in the housing when i got it.
It turns out they were axles for a 67 chevelle, so there are the right ones on the way
Since i needed axles to brakes, and everything else i wanted to do i did some other smaller tasks.
Added a driveshaft loop, the car is now 11.50 legal
Added a line loc
switches for the cruise and the line loc in the ash tray
Wiring colour of choice? black
Then i started adding some loom to clean up the wiring, it makes a lot of it almost disappear

if you look at the additional pictures you can see what it is like.
its much nicer than the standard ribbed split loom since it will "expand and contract" with the thickness of the wire in it. but due to that fact that it overlaps it makes it a little tougher to get the wire in it. I have also yet to find a way to get a clean cut on it, but the ends seem to hide quite nicely.

EL S1 Camino, nice build man! I am swapping a 5.3 into my 73' Nova and working on a tight budget! Its great to see another low-cost build a "sky is the limit budget"! Looking great.

Very nice build. I've got a LQ4 I want to put in my 69 Firebird and figured I'd try to shorten the truck pan. I think this thread is the first I've seen it done. I'm a big fan of 70-72 Chevelles and El Caminos, I'll be eager to see how the rest turns out.
As for the wire loom, you can get it split like what he used here, or in a non split sleeve you slide over the wires. It looks really clean with a little shrink tube on the ends to holds it in place. The cheapest I've found the non split stuff was on ebay. I don't remember how many feet I bought, but I got like 4 sizes and enough to do 2 or thee harnesses for $100. when I make some changes to my 89 I'll be redoing the engine harness with the braided loom.

So I guess it has been a while since i updated this thread.
We will go back to last year once I had the intake installed I was having trouble getting it to run right.
This intake gasket is what was causing my problems. So i replaced them all and got everything buttoned back up and spent most of the time driving it doing fuel tuning.
With my brothers recent purchase of a dyno I was able to strap the car down and do some timing and WOT fuel tuning.
The first pass that I made the car made something like 220hp but HP tuners said it was knocking and pulling 8 degrees. After removing timing and having it still knock it was determined that it must be false knock due to valvetrain noise. So the knock sensors were tuned out and timing 2 degrees of timing was added each pass until it peaked at 365 hp and 317 ft lbs of torque. There is still a little bit of work that needs to be done in the part throttle and cruising regions but that will come next.
