Great looking set up you have there. All that hard work is paying off! As far as the belt is concerned, I did not go back through your thread to see what W/P you are using. If you are using the factory LS1 you shouldnt have this misalignment. The harmonic balancer, if I am correct, should seat against the oil pump drive. I would not run it anything but bottomed out. I think you might have either a wrong balancer or waterpump. Could you press the pulley back further on the water pump? You may want to install the alternator and bracket to see what is out of alignment. This will give you another reference point to work off of. I am not too familiar with the water pumps specifically but I have never seen one quite like yours. I am suspecting the W/P. I can measure my GTO water pump for you if you want to compare them.

Come on man!!!! you're talking to the king of no time!!! I was going to work on my car, but I was coworsed in to vollyball with the 12 yr old,

I had to go finish washing the dinner dishes, but I figure this, ones 12, ones 9 and soon enough neither will want anything to do with dad, so if I don't get to work on it now theeres all ways later, but I always get time!

I just measured it and from the mounting pad to the pulley is 3" and spans to 5 1/8". Now take in consideration the thickness of the gasket and there you go. If you want a GTO water pump you can go to Advance Auto and purchase on for a 2005 Pontiac GTO for $122.95 plus tax. Look online and get the price and if they try to charge you more just tell them the price online and they will honor it. You might want to print it off to be sure. They went off of my word. I hope this helps you out.

Stan, tsnow...this would be the correct waterpump BELL for this series of LS1.
This same bell (with the four bolts) was on my engine as well. I changed my pump bec it was leaking, and they sent me the newer version without the four bolts. Either way, my balancer (March) is as far on as it would physically go.

Stan, what color are you considering for the manifold?

Went to check through the photo archives to see if I have a waterpump pic which will give a serial #....

meanwhile...10 mins later..couldn't find a good pic with ser #, but I have one with some #'s on the front-not sure what they mean. I'll post in a few mins.
This may not have much value to you...
The size of the photo can be expanded with the "+" button on your viewer, then, re-center the photo over the waterpump numbers.

Ok, it's 1 deg F out in the garage, and I'm going to see how the belt align is on mine. There's nothing I wouldn't do for a fellow LS1'er...well, ALMOST nothing. Pls stand by......

Here's two with the new pump. Notice the alignment. With the 'older' pump pulley, above, the alignment was right-on as well. Notice the belt wear marks on the older pump pulley. They are roughly in the same position as the 'new' bell. Going back & forth to your pump photo, it does appear that your pump body itself is wider. Somewhere, I know that I have side views of my old pump...just can't locate them at the moment.

BMF-Did you change out the oil pump drive? did you change out the crank timing gear? Has the harmonic balancer been modified?

Stan, my motor is from a 98 T/A Firebird. I think I've mentioned this before...notice the time stamp. This block was manufac on May 8th, 97.
Even though all blocks (whether Corvette or F-Body) for 97/98 were the same, I believe mine was intended for a Corvette. It may have been a leftover.

I went out and measured the distance between the end of the waterpump bolt (small bolt in the foreground on drivers side) and the side of the belt as seen in my first photo above. It'll give you a reference to the thickness of the pump body as well. This might be a more exact indicator of what should be. This measurement is just a hair short of 1 1/4".

We have a ported oil pump, and the March pulley.
Scrolling back & forth to the width of your waterpump, yours looks wider front to back than mine. So, I measured mine. Looking at the thickness beginning at the REAR of the pump (pass side/behind the thermostat), then to front of it (not incl the thermostat housing), there is exactly 2 3/4".
Do you have a GM part # visible? I'm thinking you're going to find a 97 Corvette pump there, but I can't tell for sure from here. Going on ebay, the Corvette model is diff than the 98 F-Body.
If you can get a part # , this can be searched.
Just in case you might need a pump, I got mine here..it's prob an imitation, but it was cheap with excellent feedback, and when mine arrived damaged, courtesy of UPS, these people went out of their way to make it right. It's new.
