Its a bolt in swap the longblocks are the same size. Reuse the truck intake and acc. Then all he needs is a tune for the larger motor! But a 6.0L swap will most likely be cheaper.

Is this a regular cab, or 4-door? Is it a daily driver? Does he tow anything with it? Just want to know how it's going to be used. I think I'd go with a mild cam and a good torque converter (Circle D, Vigilante, or Yank) for starters. You wouldn't have to really touch the heads yet. Then you'd need a pcm tune. If you can't get a dyno tune, many offer a mail-order tune, like Frost, that would complement whatever mods you do to the truck.

Stay on the mild side with the cam, and it will be a lot of fun. Do you know what the rear end gear ratio is?
I think I'd build on the 5.3, in stages if need be. I don't think the gains would be worth the work and trouble to go the LS1 just to gain 21 cubes.
