fuel tank clearance is a great reason - all of the rest of us with 1 piece units either run 2.5" shafts or have to firm up the mounts at the diff and the tranny to keep from rubbing on the fuel tank which saddles right over the driveshaft.

Looks like you have the evap canister hooked up to the intake manifold. I'd like to know how yours works, as on my swap this caused the gas tank to collapse after a few hours of driving. I had to punch it out with my foot and ended up disconnecting the manifold vacuum from it. Perhaps one of my other canister lines was plugged, I don't know, but it sure caused chaos.

As of today the car is officially on the road. I put about 180 miles on it and it ran great, except for some idle issues which I believe are due in part to the cam and the mail-in tune.

We also ran into tranny issues with the original T56 I bought, which is one of the reasons for the delay. I ended up getting a newer T56 out of a 2006 GTO with low miles.

Overall I am extremely happy with the swap, and my first impressions of the NVH are positive. I thought with the Samberg kit I would have felt a lot more vibrations. Don't get me wrong, it is nothing like the BMW motor, but I thought it was going to be worse. I need to get the idle issues situated soon though. It wants to die, and sometimes does die out after cruising when you come to a stop. Once the idle catches though, it wants to stay there. You just have to pedal it to get it to stay there. It's a pain in the *** though when you are coming to a light!

I have a few little things to get straightened out like the intake. Yes, we used the Dinan intake from the S52 to get it finished up quickly. This will be addressed soon, I promise! I also have some crazy rattle/vibration coming from the Hurst short shifter. I am going to find a stock F-body shifter and see if that fixes that. Other than that I am happy

I'm strongly considering putting a ls3 and 6 speed in my e34. I don't believe anyone makes a kit for the e34 though.

You used a shop in florida I assume?

the 5 series are an easier swap becuase you can use the stock exhaust manifolds without any clearance issues like in the 3 series.

there is a guy actually selling a really nice e36 wagon with an ls of some kind in front of an auto, very nice car for a solid price.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to give a whole 6 months to research and planning before I begin (at least that's my plan right now). This seems like a great place to do some of that at.

I love sleeper wagons... one of my favorite setups. Got a link for this? I'd like to look at it (not as a prospective buyer but just for curiosity). Too bad it's not a manual.

You don't see e36 wagons all that much but they are very cool (they were never officially sold in the u.s... but there are a few around still). One bmw that makes a better wagon than sedan IMO is the e39 (which is just a great car all around and pretty cheap used today for what you are getting... the 6 cylinder models are very reliable.. 540i 8 not so much though).

Has anyone seen or heard of an lsx 318ti? (if you don't know, those are a compact shorter hatch version of the e36.. super light weight).

A car that light, with a lsx engine, could potentially just be unbelievably fast. I believe their front clip is identical to other e36 so it sounds like it could definitely be done.

I've heard of M3 engines in them but never an lsx.

there is a guy that did one, they have a smaller rear end that can't take the power near as much as the straight 6 models offered in the e36 but it can be swapped over.

if you're going for unbelievably light just strip an e36 and cage it, they down pretty light but not so much that you have obscene traction issues

Yes, I used a shop in SW FL. They did a good job getting it together. There is still a lot left to do, but it drives nicely the way it is.
