My wife always wanted a Cadillac !
One of the nicest 1979 cadillacs I have ever seen. Engine is knocking so it's time for an lq9. Picked it up cheap so I figured what the hell. It's even got a factory CB radio. One question though... is a Cadillac 400 trans bell housing the same as a chevy 400 bell housing(bolt pattern)?

Why not just swap in an overdrive trans as well like a 4l80e. That would make it more driveable with the overdrive.
And the bellhouse pattern is different on the Caddy th400 from the LSx motors.

Cadillac uses BOP pattern. (Buick Olds Pontiac). I would suggest using a 4L60E, modified for the power level you expect to make. Also suggest getting a rear end assembly from a 94-96 Impala. It's a bolt in for 77-96 B,C and D body cars and gives you rear disc brakes. In case you don't know almost any suspension part for a 94-96 Impala wil work in your 79. I used tubular control arms for a Impala in my 77 CDV.

And the '94-96 9C1 police Caprices are more plentiful in the yards, and are mechanically just about identical to a '94-96 Impala SS. Some came with L99 4.3L V8s that look just like an LT1, but the rear end would be a 3.08 gear with discs just like any stock Impala SS. A 9C1 may or may not be a G80 rear with an Auburn posi diff, whereas all Impalas of those years would be a G80.

And 9c1 rearends are narrower than the Impala-SS rearend just for clarification. But to the op, that is one clean Cadillac, makes me reminisce about the 83' CoupeDeville my dad gave me my senior year in hs. Definitely ditch the 400 for an overdrive trans if funds allow, but if not then theres an adapter made by Hughes you can purchase it thru Summit, it will allow the bop trans's to bolt up to the Chevy blocks.
