Had the big yearly car show with work today for the woodward dream cruise. They had a couple of the new transformer trucks there, and the hotwheels camaro. We do a show in the morning around the lake in front of our building and then there is a sweet police escorted drive down to the event on woodward. It was a pretty fun day at work.

here are the transformer trucks. I think the black one is called dreadbot or something like that.

and here is the green chrome hotwheels camaro

havnt been doing any real work on the car. went to a test and tune the other weekend and did some drifting. Here is a quick clip of one corner, ended up spinning on this one but who cares. does give a good sound clip of the car.

on the to do list.
-fix front spoiler that I ripped off and split in half drifting.
-make a mold of the spoiler so I can make multiples for the multiple spoilers I will be ripping off the car.
-finish interior
-fab and install hydro hand brake
-start designing for more steering angle and rack and pinion that is "not" steeroids!

In the meantime I just moved into a new house, lots of work to do on the house, and left my beautiful garage that I just built for an old crappy smaller one that needs to be completly rewired and new lighting. So theres where I sit.

Good looking build. I am about to head in the same direction as you have with my 80 c3 vette. And have a couple question.

What radiator are you running?
The plan for my car is to make it fun to drive. I plan on swapping in a 8.8 ford with a 4 link and ditching the IRS. Going with a 5.3/4l80e combo converting it to e85 and a s480 when the time comes.

That is one horrible looking camaro. I hope it at least has some type of go-fast mods, so it can have some saving grace.

Have you seen some of the hotwheel toy cars? Is there too many of them that would look amazing as a full scale vehicle? For a promotional vehicle teaming with hotwheels and showing the capabilities of technology, I think its pretty cool, thats not wrapped.

Thanks,
The radiator is a DeWitts unit. Was on the car when I got it.
Sounds like you will have some fun with it. I am planning on building the 5.3 iron block I have sitting in the garage for this hopefully in the near future so I can use this motor for the porsche project I have.

5.3's are great because they are cheap and strong. Sounds like you might be doing a bit of drag with it going to a straight axle?

I appreciate the interest. Unfortunately not much progress has been happening on the car. This life business stuff has been getting in the way. I have been planning though and purchasing bits here and there. I just ordered a borgeson steering box which is on its way. I also purchased a tubing bender so a complete gut and rebuild will be happening in the future. I plan to turn it into a dedicated track car that may be driven on the street every once and a while. Will basically be a cage with removable body pieces. I want to be able to easily remove the rear clip, front fenders and basically every other body piece individually. Will also be making my own bolt on style wide body fenders. It will be cool if I can ever get some time to work on it.

Been a long time since I've posted anything on here. Thought about selling the car, and had it up for sale for a little while, but once the weather got nice again and I started driving it again I remembered how awesome this car is. So It's staying for now. I have ben working on a headlight solution. Because of the intercooler the factory headlights are a no go anymore, so I started fabing some custom fixed headlights with LED light bars. The idea is a cross between the C5 fixed headlights and the L88 style.

I started with a cardboard paper template.

Then started transferring to aluminum.

The buckets

With the light bars in place they stick above surface a bit. I debated between fixing the factory headlight covers with a slight open pop. While it does look better than the factory open position, this is just not the look I want all the time. If I could have them open and close to this position it would of been good, but there just isnt the space.

So I've been working on the fixed lenses. Currently making the shape/form of the lens which I will pull a mold off of and then have molds to slump or vacuform plexy into to have a final clear plexy cover.
I started with some simple wood forms to get the general rail surfaces to clear the light bars.

I covered the aluminum buckets with foil to make sure no fiberglass would adhere to it.

I used some cotton to stretch over the entire form to get a rough main shape to start with. Installed them back on the car to maintain the flats and then started the resin and a couple layers of fiberglass. I now have a rough start to the shapes and will fill and shape the rest to get the final forms of the covers.

I've also chopped off the exhaust so it is now just a dump out the fender. Surprisingly not any louder at lower rpms and average cruising, but does bark pretty good wide open.

I've also started making a hydraulic hand brake. I've got the handle sorted out. I started with a 1/2 piece of aluminum.

Progress on the headlights has been continuing but slow. I have gone a little further into the process to be able to make positive casts to make multiples of the lenses down the road.

The lens forms

After the forms were done I covered them in box tape and then 3 or 4 coats of wax

Here are the molds of the forms before I have removed them from the car. Hopefully they pop off fairly easily. The wood is a simple support structure for them and also create a nice flat surface for them to sit on while using them.

I have also taken the plunge to go flared. Always loved the look but didnt want to spend the money. Had previously refurbished some work mesh 3 piece wheels, 17x14 rear and 17x11 front. Found some flares on ebay for cheap so on they are going. Just got the wheels on the car last night, will start really fitting the flares tonight.

Got the headlight molds pulled off, they turned out pretty well for the quick layup job I did and use of box tape and wax as the mold release. I didnt need them to be perfect as I will now be pouring plaster positives to vacuform over and I can do final finish work to those.

I finished getting the flares mounted. The rear fitment is on point, wheel sticks out from the flare a bit and the stretch on the tires tuck up in the flare nicely. I wish the fronts where a bit more of the same but they sit inside the flare. I'm not complaining for having the wheels for a different project originally.

Sucks about this lame photobucket ****, but oh well. Kind of lost touch with updating build threads but the work never stops on the car. Tons of changes and progress since my last post. I'll just blow this thread up with updates now.

I'll try and keep it in order, so here are a bunch of photos now with the flares.

I sold the old hood, it was way too tall for driving on road course and auto-x. I went with an L88 skin and mounted it pin on. Have wanted to block out the front area of the car that the hood hinged into for airflow into the radiator for a long time and this was the only real way to do that. I also opened up the hood where in my opinion it should always be open anyway. Never makes any sense to me why its left closed.

Did some more interior work wrapping some of the aluminum. going with brown vinyl in a weave pattern and a worn look. Also sold the old seats and working on some custom upholstery on the low back vintage style Kirkeys.

Finally just mounted my LED bars in the grill area and affixed the gutted light covers with a flange. I will get back to making my version of the L88 covers later but just wanted the wholes covered and headlights so I could finally drive it at night.

I really like the improved racing oil pan baffle setup for the LS1 engine but couldn't justify spending the money. Found out they sell just the hinged trap doors separately for a great price so I purchased a set of those and made my own. Very happy with the result and now dont have to worry about the chance of oil starvation on the track.
