HELP! LS1 Locked up! My daughter has a 2000 Z28, hit something and busted out 2 holes in the oil pan about the size of my fist. She drove the car till it died! Now I gotta put in a new motor. Delima: Found an LT1 to swap out, get her running again. By far the cheapest way out if the trany will work. She took the car to a dealership they said need new motor, they want to put in a crate at $10,000.
I can buy a crate for $5000 and install myself, she doesn't have that kind of money. I have a six cyl laying around from one of my old trucks, maybe I should install that. I am really wondering if the LT1 is good enought(she is 16) and will it work. PLEASE Advise me on this one.

LT1 will be more problems than its worth.. Too many things changed... You'd need the wiring harness, PCM, mounts are different, accessories won't mount up, etc. etc.
Look around on the forum classifieds, you'll find stock, used shortblocks for under a grand and fresh rebuilt ones for not much more. For 5K you would get one heck of a built motor !! Finding you an inexpensive engine won't be a problem

I found a good used "pull out" LS1 AND trans for $2800.. I would bet you could find a low miles (20k ish) for around $2k if you try hard..
I think that would be lowest cost/less hassle route.. good luck

Good point. Technically, its an insurance issue if it happened while driving.

Thanks for all the input, I'll look for a rebuild and swap over parts. Done it many times on old trucks. My daughters grandmother bought this car for her, not me..... My daughters mother called the ins and they said if she turns in a claim her ins will go sky high. Don't know what to believe, my daughter said she only has liability. Oh well I'll just get her going again

Just replace the short block not the entire engine. What you need to do is pull out the engine and go over and see what damaged has happened. From what you described the worst case scenario is you may have to replace the short block.
A block can be aquired for about 400, crank for about 150, Stock pistons about what 250? And then a machine shop to assemble and balance it for about 450.
