LQ4 idenification Can anything be determined by this number on an LQ4?
517900796742319,owner says its the VIN but it does not look like it to me.Possibly engine serial number.Picture looks like its on the cylinder head.When I go look at this is there any way to narrow down the year?I can easily tell the early ones due to the iron heads but what do I look for??

Thats the serial number on the head and isnt worth much. VIN is stamped into the rear of the block opposite of the starter for most years. It can be on the upper pad, down the side or inside the bell area
You can get a rough idea for the year by the parts on the engine:
Head material, gasket type, steam crossover type, TB type, etc

Picked this up tonight.Drive by wire TB ECM number looks like its 2001-02 came with a 4L80E.Some where I found a site listing of the ECM numbers from GM but forgot to save it.Anybody??

Well finally had a chance to look at this thing.I seperated the engine from the trans and it did not appear to have been apart before and the ECM was still bolted in the harness.ECM number shows 01-03 red/blue connectors on the harness.But the 4l80e was manufactured in 05??
There is a number stamped if you can call it that in the block at the drivers rear but it does not look like a complete vin.Looks like the LQ4 has MLS type head gaskets.I have to swap pans so I will be able to check out the rods at that point.From what I have read 05 LQ4 would have the LS3/LQ9 rod???

Verdad Gallardo Most likely the last 6 digits of the VIN if its on the block. Take it to a dealership and get more info. The stronger rods are from a LS2 and only marginally stronger than generic LSx rods. Biggest difference is the full floating pin and coated piston skirts
05 on the trans could mean it was replaced under warranty not long into service. No way you'll have a 0411 PCM on an 05. Its a good engine any way you slice it. Figure out if its a LQ4 or LQ9 and move on

Well it has the LS3 type rod and coated piston skirts.It is real clean inside looks like a good score.
I will have to go check the harness,it was cut in two pieces so maybe the ECM is incorrect for the motor.From what I have read the ECM is a good one to work with.

I bought this LQ4 and am trying to run the VIN to see how many miles are on it. The numbers are hard to read. I called the dealer to get the vin based on the pics below and it comes up as a clean title 2005 4x4 truck on the road still in Montana. The engine and 4x2 trans I took apart and looked to be the first time they have been separated. Opinions on what this number reads? Second to last digit looks funny,I assumed it was a 1. Anybody have any experience reading these numbers. TIA
