Default GBody EFI Gas Tank Years and Models

I've been searching for a couple hours now and i'm trying to find the years and models of what gas tanks I can use in my 84 cutlass gbody.

So far I have

1987 Monte Carlo 4.3

What other years can i use and what years of GN can I use?

Thanks,

Basically anything with a fuel injected V6 in it. Obviously the Buick Grand national & T-Type will work. The Monte (non SS) from 85 - 87, probably the same from a Cutlas or Grand Prix.

My problem i'm running into is when searching car-part they just say a year and a tank. So is it safe to say that if I search for 87 Buick Regal 3.8 they are all EFI? or 87 Monte Carlo 4.3 they are all EFI?

Yes, that will get you a baffled tank. What is "car-part" that you are searching? I could use one too. Originally I just used the sending unit in a regular non-baffled tank. No major issues, a few times seen some pump starving when tank was low. Never raced it, so no real hard G corners.

www.car-part.com searches junkyards.

1985
Fuel Tank
Buick Regal RWD

Is that an EFI Tank? I chose 3.8 turbo on the search. I'm just concerned about years.

Better call those places before you buy. Yards around me punch holes in them to drain out the gas and don't sell the tanks I think to cover themselves against engine damage from debris that it might suck in.

Are you looking in the desert or around you in OH? Another reason to not buy a JY tank is because of the rust issue around here.

Looking in Ohio. I would just buy an aftermarket but everyone has problems with filling them and they modify them. I thought it would be easier to just find a junk yard tank and rock on.

You're right it would be much better using a factory tank. Its just hard to find them. The tank has trouble venting when refueling which is a pain in the *** when gas spills on you

I found one, they are going out to take a picture for me, its still on the car apparently. They said its a turbo car. They originally said they wouldn't sell it bc its still on the car. Wonder whats wrong with the car. May ask that too when they call back.

Does this look like an aftermarket or stock tank? I know the pic kind of sucks. Looks pretty new to me.

What are they going to charge you? Looks pretty new, or garaged all its life. For around $50 I'd buy it not knowing. For much more than that I'd pull the sending unit at the yard and check for the baffles. Sending units can be modded to fill easy as well as the filler neck. maliburacing.com has a good thread on the filler neck mod and member here "the-merv" has a thread about his car where he shows you what he did to his sending unit to vent better. Beauty of the stock tanks is that the baffles are apparently much better than those on the aftermarket tanks.

Strap looks pretty rusty compared to the tank. They want $150 complete. Could have an aftermarket fuel pump in it for all I know.

i have tried to find a OE tank recently with no luck.. SO i am going to buy a aftermarket replacement tank and have found a few different vendors ie: Spectra, Dorman etc etc... Which one is better or should i just get one and modify it?

That appears to be a stock G body fuel tank, as I dropped several over the years to install Walbro fuel pumps. Here is a pic of my OE 86 Grand National tank.

Does $150 sound like overkill for it?

If you are getting the sending unit & pump too for $150, I say grab it.

You're going to need a new pump no matter what, the old FI cars did not run as high pressure as what you will need for the LSx. I paid around that for a brand new one, then bought a new sending unit (because i had a carb before) and then a pump (walbro). Ask if you can take a look at it, if they don't want to drop it for you ask if you can come by and drop it to take a look.

Good point, I forgot the pump is not going to work.
