Default EBay Radiators

Anyone have experience using one of the double pass cross flow radiators sold by Speedway or CFR Performance? I want to put a cross flow double pass radiator in my Studebaker to get both inlet and outlet on the passenger side. The 19 x 24 should fit and I can use reducers to get the hoses to fit. I am cooling OK with my present radiator now. My motor is pretty much stock and I am using an external cooler for the transmission. Would love to hear from folks using a similar radiator and if they are satisfied with the cooling. I have priced custom set ups and they are two to three times the cost of the ones from these folks.

thanks in advance!

Pat,

I bought mine from Jeg's, it was $220 three years ago for the midsized unit. Here's your size for $229. No complaints and pretty fair quality!

I've used a brand called Mishimoto in a few of my import cars. They have a lifetime warranty. I had one leak on me they sent me one free no hassles. And at $150 for a new rad, can't beat that!

I am using one on my 52 starlight commander and it holds at 180-185 on a taurus fan. The only issue I have is I am not running a thermostat, but that might be due to having a crappy 5.0 in it . . . Yes 4.8 ls is on the way in.

If I remember right CFR doesn't have a drain bung in the radiator.

Where are you buying these from ? I went on their website and the cheapest one I saw started at $240.

I was just talking to a buddy with Merc and he was saying a two-row would suffice, he had one behind a 700hp Nova.

I'm interested two in same rad, inlet/outlet on the passenger side, in the 19 tall, 26-28 wide range.

I'm still unclear if I should just run the inlet on the drivers side if I run an F-Body water pump.

Thanks every one for the replies. Just FYI the primary reason I want to change to a double pass radiator is to make it easier to fab up a cool air intake by going straight over the top of the radiator. Not having the upper hose go across the front of the motor will clear a lot of space. I have noticed that most of the EBay radiators do not have a drain bung. At first this was an issue for me, but, I have had my LS1 Stude on the road for over 5 years now and have never had to drain my radiator. For that reason the drain bung is not a deal breaker. If I really need a drain, Jegs sells an in line drain for less than $20 that goes in the lower hose. I have priced out the radiator in question plus a shroud and 16" 2300 CFM fan all for less than $350 on EBay. Quotes from custom makers have ranged from $750 shipped for just a radiator to over $1000 with a shroud and fan. That's a lot of money I can spend somewhere else. Glad to hear those who have posted had good performance from similar rads. I guess it's like buying a suit off the rack or having one custom tailored.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Is your current radiator a 1 row or 2 row?

Are you running the coolant crossover (I forget what they are called, the thing that goes above the valley cover... That needs to get tied into the fitting on the rad yeah?

Here's a pic of the Jeg's radiator mocked up in my Maverick with an old Buick GN fan (that keeps me at 170°, no problem)...

I currently have a down flow brass radiator based on the original Studebaker radiator. It actually has 3 rows. My understanding is that the 2 row aluminum crossflow will cool better than a 3 row brass down flow.

For the steam vent I have drilled and tapped the top of my water pump and put an NPT fitting in there and have a hose running from the crossover straight to the fitting. 5+ years and 17k miles and it works just fine. You can see pictures if you look through my build at the link in my signature.

Hopefully before then Brian. It is my plan to drive it back to Indiana in July for the Studebaker International Meet.

Okay, made my decision. I bought this CFR radiator from EBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/290582693783...ht_3625wt_1094

I also bought the matching shroud:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/390348680386...ht_3524wt_1094

I already have a good 16 inch fan that I will attach to the shroud. My current radiator mounts to the core support with brackets on the side. To mount the new radiator etc. I am going to cradle it instead and use this mount also offered by CFR:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CFR-UNIVERSA...ht_3330wt_1094

I thought it was a pretty good deal, it's actually $10 less on their web page vs EBay. It is probably all of $15 in material, if that, but it is already engineered and I plan to bolt it to the bottom of my core support. Looks like a clean simple way to mount it. Once I get it I will post the install on my build log and post a link here.

Thanks again for your input and encouragement.

I'd to hear how this works out for you, I'd be looking to do pretty much the same radiator but more around the 28 wide x 17-19 tall.

Looks exactly like the Jeg's rad I got for $50 more.
