I am seriously interested in an LS1 for my 79 trans am. My concern is that I want to have the shaker function, with an air box under it. I want to have it fit, and am wondering how low you can get an LS1 in a 2nd gen fbody with the stock subframe.
This one is an LS7 with a dry sump.

I think most of these scoop setups are hand made by the owners. I've had a functioning one back when my car was carbureted. Now, mine is primarily an air extractor, relieving under-hood air pressure at higher speeds. I pull intake air from behind the passenger headlights.
Regarding oil pans, I've used C5 batwing and C6 pans without any problems. The bottom of both pans ends up around an inch higher than the bottom most part of the cross member. I have more issues with the exhaust hitting stuff than anything else (mostly the U-bolt connecting the mufflers to my turn downs.

I have a 1977, the ls fits nicely under the hood, i have plans made to us the factory fuel rail mounting holes and using metal rods to mount the factory shaker to, this method still holds the fuel rails in place with no modifications. The extended rods is where it will mount to the shaker scoop and running my own made air box under the shaker, simular to the photo above
