I have a 5.3 litre also my plan was to go with a carburator but I was given a LS1 intake, throttle body, and a GM hotcam for free so you would have to be nuts not to go fuelinjection.. I have a set of 706's which I am going to get checked I know about the problem with them cracking. With the hotcam and a set of headers, with a 3600 stall and a 4L60E tranny with a set of gears, i'm hoping to make 400h/p with any luck.. I am planning on putting this in a Mustang, it will be my DD, and proably a appearance at the track to get a timeslip. I think these motors are underated big time.

Super Chevy did an article on this that you might be interested in....

Note that the LS2 went to 462hp with just a set of long tube headers. I just bought an LS2 and I haven't dynoed it but I have the headers, a performance tune (20hp, according to the guys at PCM Performance), and I built a cold air intake (10hp, give or take). Add that up and you get 492. Now of course I don't expect nearly 500hp for REAL...but 450, 460, yeah probably.

And yeah, cam swaps can add up price wise. Not sure why guys are talking studs and gaskets, why do the heads need to come off?

Thanks for the responses.
I found some other threads here too, and with all of the suggestions, here's what I think I'm going to go with:
5.3 Vortec = $500
LS1 intake/rails/injectors = $200
professionally ported heads = $250
Cam/valve springs/pushrods = $500 (still need to research what cam I want)
Sikky long tube headers = $600
high flow cats/exhaust = $300-$400
Good tune = $250
Think this should put me in the 400hp range fairly cheaply and easily.

A good cam will cost you around 400... even a mild cam...springs another 200... I would advise against a LS6 Cam or even a LQ9 cam for your 5.3, both will only yield you 370-380 hp on motor.. the LS3 cam will get you about 420 HP... Some cams also require the use of 1.8 Rockers... The highest HP from a stock LM7 with just a cam swap is about 430. Heads will only yield you about 30 Hp. This is considering all other variables... Don't forget some cams will require a convertor swap also...

im making a little over 350whp with my ls1 and all I have on it is a SLP lid with SLP CAI, hooker headers 1 7/8th, and a custom exhaust 3in but I also don't have to pass emissions so I have none of that stupidity. If I cared to add the cam and kit I have id probably be in the 425ish area but im going to a 5.3l turbo so I need a new cam anyways.
