How long to run engine and tranny before first drain?

Default How long to run engine and tranny before first drain?

So I got my Grand Wagoneer up and running. Except for a hairline transfer case crack leak, everything is good. She's got some power.

Anyways, I want to drop all the fluids and filters since my 6.0 and 4l80e were used and I rebuilt and there was gunk in the intake manifold that probably made its way into the cylinders.

So how long would you run it to collect all the contaminants in the filters and fluids?

30 minutes. Get it warm and get it all out. Then go 1000 miles and change the engine oil. This post should get you hundreds of opinions. Just giving you mine.

Sounds good. Your answer is the only one so far and it seems to make sense to me!

I dumped the np241c already because it has a hairline crack and rear ouput seal leaked. Fixed with jb weld. No more leak.

Would you also do the same interval for the transmission?

No need to do it on the trans. I usually run the engine 30 mins...change oil and filter...then again at 2500 to 3000 depending on how hard the car is driven

I changed mine after 500 miles. I change trans fluid and filter every 50k miles, but changed it at 500 miles initially.

Can't really say much concerning the tranny. The only automatic I own is a Nissan cvt, and it's not really serviceable, per say. The other 4 vehicles in my stable are all manuals. I like the 3rd pedal. I believe Jesus Freak has it right concerning the service IMO.

This is going to be a potential tow vehicle...hence the auto. Manuals are so much easier to take care of.

Week I'm just going to change the tranny anyways. Can't hurt....except in the wallet

Same, took it up to temp w/ a light drive around the block, checked for leaks. Found no leaks and drained and replaced oil. Good way to start your maintenance schedule.

The tranny I didn't drain after its initial fill after the swap though.
