I've been reading up on this swap and will be picking a box up this week to do the swap. I read that the 93-98 steering box will work. Does it have to be from a 2wd or 4wd jeep? or are the boxes the same? I can't find this info anywhere.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I purchased one just a month ago or so. I struggled to find the info needed for this swap (the search function here is great if you have a couple of full days to kill), so I ended up buying the wrong box at first.
The box that you need is a jeep Grand Cherokee, 98' model, two or four wheel drive. They are the same box. You can look for a 93-98 box, as they are the same. I bought mine from a buddy who owns a yard, and I found a low mile 98' for $75.00. I got the steering shaft with it so I won't need a different rag joint. I will adapt the jeep shaft, which uses a universal joint, instead of a rag joint.

I want the quick ratio 12.7:1 box for sure. From the research I did today The following boxes are what I need.
1992.5-1993 Alpha code AL or BT
1994 Alpha code AL, BT, or PD
1995 Alpha code JH
1996 Alpha code KD
1997-1998 Alpha code WK or BT
Anyone know where the alpha code is on the boxes? I will be looking for one this week.

93-98 GC steering box, $40-50 used, $120 new Autozone. Never found any 2wd/4wd difference or any other ratio. Original A body was about 16:1 (felt like driving an old school bus),GC is about 12.7:1, huge difference.
Dorman rag joint 31011, $40 Autozone
85 monte carlo high pressure hose $14 Autozone
You reuse the A body pitman arm.
In terms of a real difference, best $100 I spent on any car.

If you buy new from a parts store they usually want a core charge of between $75.00-$100.00 if you dont have a core to turn in. If you have your old one you can use it for the core exchange as they look identical on the outside, the only noticeable difference is the o-ring or flare female fittings, but I guarantee 99.9% of the dweebs at most parts store don't know what to look for.

ive used several of the jeep boxes, 92-98 GRAND Cherekees 2 or 4 wd...need a rag joint from a mid 80 3/4 ton chevy trk, and it uses metric hoses. Or you can buy some inserts to be able to use the chevellle hoses...I get them from a junk yard for $75... well worth it....

interstingly enough - I go to my pick a part and the GC boxes are listed as 93-95, 96 only and 97-98
so which one - definitely not the 96 - it is some soft steer thing
thanks
