How do I check oil pressure without starting the motor,
I'm getting near to starting the motor for the first time.
I just want to make sure the oil pump is doing it's job.

The GM instructions for their crate motors says to pull all the spark plugs and crank it over 10 seconds at a time until pressure is observed. I had the stock oil pressure gauge hooked up to the top back of the motor.
If you don't have a gauge you can measure the resistance of the stock sensor. this guide has a table.

I prelubed the engine using one these Motive Products - Power Fill Pro 1 gallon then started the motor up and had oil pressure within a few seconds.

I took a galley plug out on the drivers side, low, and made a primer from an article I read in a magazine. Basically you put a small block oil pump in a 2 gallon bucket with fresh oil and then spin the pump to presurize the system. It worked, is cheap, and there was oil throughout the engine. My mechanical oil pressure gauge is hooked to the rear of the engine behind the intake. Oil pressure a soon as it started.
