Default T56 (LT1 vs. LS1)

I can't seem to find an affordable LS1 T56. I have found several LT1 T56s. I know the input shaft is different. Are there any other differences? If I want to use the LT1 T56 couldn't I just shange the flywheel to the adapter flywheel that is used to bolt and style 4-speed to an LS1?

Hey don, the front mid plate and and bellhousing is different too. I was in the same boat by time u buy conversion parts its better to just wait for a ls style one.

I would think that all you would need is the conversion flywheel and pilot bushing. Use the LT1 clutch and throwout. Gen 1 and 2 use the same trans and all you need to bolt a gen 1 or 2 trans to LS engines should be a flywheel and pilot bushing. I could be wrong though!

I've seen a few other posts on this. People have done it with input, plate, bell, but I think the consensus is get an LS t56

I don't think anyone sells a LS flange/LT1 clutch flywheel. You could get one custom made but I would hate to see the $$$ for that.

I believe most of what you're looking for is covered in this article:

Last time I checked LS1 T56's can be had for 1000-1200 bucks. It's not worth it to convert the LT1 style. Gotta pay to play brother.

I'm curious if you put the .400" spacer between the bell housing and the engine block, how much space that would gain you for running the larger flywheel? Seems like you are only talking .5" anyway when you split the diameter of the clutch disk. It would also keep the flywheel in the stock position, so no issues with the starter.

Isn't the issue that the input shaft is .400" short so you would need to remove .400" from the bell not add it?

Haha I like the line of thinking though. A couple threads down were trying to figure it out as well. There does not seem to be a budget setup for running an LT1 with an LS although I am curious how much material is on the trans side of an BBC bellhousing. If there is the room you could machine it down the .400" and redrill it to fit the t56.
