Yoke sticks out 2" or so. This is a 4l80e behind an lq4 in a 68 Camaro. Mirrors get blurry at about 70.

Default Yes

You will snap the splined input...ask me how I know...
If your lucky it wont destroy your tail housing and tear thru the floor pan...
shim your drivelines angles optimally, and remeasure... you should get perhaps max 1 inch of the splined slip joint sticking out past the rear seal...

Only way to tell is to disconnect it from the rear yoke and push it all the way in...should only pull back out about 3/4" or so from bottomed out to attach to the rear.

To do it the correct way you need to measure the distance between the rearend and trans. Here are the instructions http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/how_to_measure.html

I wouldn't be too quick to say "Yes"....

OP, How long is the yolk? Just because you see a lot of shaft sticking out, doesn't mean you have too little engagement.

Not sure. From what I understand there should not be anymore that .75" of play between the yoke and
ranny. Will have to disengage the drive shaft but it will have to wait because I'm going out of town. I think my pinion needs to come up more. I added 2.5* shims but it still vibrates - especially on decelleration. Also my rear is leaking from the pinion. What a headache.....

When I measure from my starter it seems my engine/tyranny is 5* down and my pinion is about 2.5* up. I hope these vibration blues are cured soon.

What you don't want is the yolk coming out from suspension travel (Too short) or bottoming out with suspension travel (Too long).

Obviously you have plenty of yolk cushion from bottoming out, now the question is just how much engagement you have.

So when the shaft is engaging the pinion, how much distance should there be between the yoke and the bottom of the tail shaft?

Also, is the starter a good place to measure the drive line angle?

There is a minumum to compensate for suspension travel. It's typically 3/4"-1"

I measure angle from the U-joints with a magnetic angle finder.
