Default LS1 smoking like crazy...why?

Got my swap running. LS1 looks to be running like a champ. Claim from guy I bought motor from says it was rebuilt. I took a look at the underside after removing oil pan and looked pretty clean but only two of the piston rods actually looked new. Anyway, got it running, idles pretty smooth and revs nicely however there is a lot of smoke and even more smoke when I rev the engine. Any ideas why there is so much smoke? Smoke is white by the way and I don't have a PVC setup yet...could lack of PVC make that much smoke? Any help appreciated.

I would definetly hook the pcv up and see what that does for it. White smoke usually means coolant though possibly head gaskets?

It's definitely the pcv, I got a swap running with the pcv ports plugged and it smoked like crazy, hooked it up proper and it went away in about 2 miles, so I can almost guarantee that's your issue

You might have cooked valve guides. If you cant clean up the smoke with the PCV I would do a leak down . Then pull the heads and look for bad guides or very pitted exhaust valve seats that don't close well.
If the heads need work you can find them for 2-300 bucks(good heads not junk yard take offs) not 243 casting but you probably don't have those now.

start simple, if you dont have pcv then you probaly have all the tubes/holes capped ? remove the oil cap and run it, if the smoke is considraby less then you have a crankcase pressure (solved by running a pcv system) if nothing changes it might be a ring seal problem

There could be many reasons for smoke, most caused by possible oil or coolant leaking into the cylinder:

Cracked Rings or Piston
Blown head gasket
Bad Valve Seals
Bad Valve Guides
Crack in head or block

If you suspect the PCV, and don't have a PCV System, make sure that the engine is well vented, leave the oil cap off and the pcv port on the valve covers are open.

then again, it is possible the rings are not seated yet.

Good luck on finding the cause.

I appreciate all the input guys. I checked compression and all looks to be good so I'm feeling better about it not being bad rings.m Will try PCV this week and see what that gets me.

I had white smoke at start up and when real cold antifreeze coming out of the exhaust. Ended up replacing head gaskets.

You probably haven't run it long enough to notice a drop in coolant level. At any rate keep checking the oil for coolant and vice versa.

It's been a long dead thread but I'm going to give kudos to ealvarez11 for coming back into it and telling everyone what the problem was.
