5.3 s10 under 3 grand?
OK here is what i have going on....
i have a budget of 3 grand that i would like to stick to, but if not oh well.
i would like to go in the 12s on street tires. but it will also be my dd. I want to get a nice s10 with no motor or tranny. put a 400 turbo in it and a 9 inch rear end with 31 spline axles.... so do you think its possible? and if not how far could 3 grand go?

I would be impressed if you can do it...did the same sort of budget oriented swap in my 81 camaro with carbed 5.3 and 4 speed and I'm right at $5000-5500 but I did a full restoration minus exterior paint..carbed is much cheaper but if the body of the s10 is in good shape and you have fab/wrenching skills with good determination you can make it happen...fuel injection much more expensive so that's a challenge especially if you don't have the turbo 400 or 9" yet...if you wanna stick to budget I have two words for you...Craigslist and ls1tech classifieds

I'm going to have around $2500 in my 5.3/4l60 swap, not counting the truck and I got the engine, tranny and all accessories except alternator for $600. The little stuff adds up quickly.

I have 2 turbo 400s that are ready to go. If I have to come up with a couple more thousand I will. So what would be the best mods for me to buy that I get the most bang for my buck? Me and my dad are gonna be doing this and he is a awesome fabricator. I'll post pics as soon as we get this thing going.

cam and valve springs are first two things to get. After that is decide on short or long tube headers once it is in the truck. Good fabrication for these swaps is essential. And plenty of money for the electric bill...
I am actually looking at the same thing. Scored a rebuilt turbo 400 for $400 with a shift kit installed. I have to go pick it up today or tomorrow.
the guy I am getting my 5.3 from said he would go straight across on my 4.3/4l60e to the 5.3 he has that has ecu/harness/flywheel/starter/alternator.
I still have to get
shifter, radiator, efi fuel pump,
motor mounts, trans mount,
headers, exhaust, radiator for LS,
cooling fan, harness re-worked,
ecu re-programmed, new driveshaft,
and about $500 in misc stuff that I haven't even figured out I will need yet.
So the $3000 isn't even close for me and I don't have to pay for an engine. And that is still using the 7.625 rear also.

Just the harness and ecu would be almost $600
shifter $200
radiator $200-800
motor mounts $60
trans mount $50 if you don't have to move the cross member. If you do add some for the fab stuff
I found a swap kit on ebay that has headers, motor mounts, and gaskets for $378
http://www.ebay.com/itm/330855504324...84.m1438.l2649
So that knocks some out of the individual costs by getting a package.
See how its all adding up??
Yeah, craigslist and the classifieds here will help... But keeping it under $3000 is gonna be a heck of a challenge unless you can get some people to donate stuff they have no use for.

It's the little stuff that adds up. I picked up a wrecked camaro and used allot off that and still the fittings and an lines and brackets all add up. I won't say it in impossible but def need to sit down and budget it out. I put an 8.8 in mine and it was posi and have a 9" housing and center but axles and brakes can run about 700. So it may not take long to hit 3000. When I started my 89 s10 turbo I figured about 5000 and it was a stock 5.3 arp bolts and head studs and turbo 350. I think that will be where you will end up to have everything you want.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Oil pans are a pretty penny too. IIRC, you can get away with a H2 or H3 Hummer oil pan on an s10, still at least $300 any way you look at it.
Could you have a running and driving swapped truck for $3k? Yeah. With a Ford 9" and turbo 400? I don't see it.

black 98s10 beat me to it , was the first thing i thought of to save you coin , i bought my 373 posi 8.8 with disc brakes and a spare short axil , for 113 bucks , most 9 inch center sections without housing , axils , brakes or anything are around 700 , put one together and maybe around 2 grand , my advise if you do , is to pull the tube from the center section , shorten and press back in and reweld .

^ What he said. That makes the difference. If it's 2wd the back tires will stick out past the bedside if you go this route. It can be fixed with more backspacing on the wheels. On a budget this tight you're probably going to stick with what you've got. Is the truck you're doing a v6 or I4?
Side note: If it's a 4x4 this swap is going to be almost impossible to do it in this tight of a budget. But if it is the 8.8 can go in with out a ton of mods.

I already have a mini-spool in mine now. So the 8.8 is not a major issue, especially since I am not running any power adders, and I DO drag race. If/when it fails, I am told it would be around the 400 HP mark. That is a pretty high mark. Easily obtained on a 5.3 or even the 4.8L, but still a high mark. And yes, the 4x4 wheels are severely offset compared to 2wd... Its almost a front wheel drive wheel..
