Column shifter 67 camaro resto mod Any good pointers on how to use the original column shifter assembly to a 4L60E in a 67 Camaro resto-mod? Any good product suggestions? Motor is set out of a 2000 TransAm with trani.
I kept my column shifter in my Monte using all Monte parts. I think that Lokar makes cable assemblies that enable you to use column shift, just have to use their brackets that mount using the pan bolts so the cable is properly supported. I had to have my exhaust hung low because of the way the shifter bar and Z-bar are mounted to the car...probably should have spent a few dollars (or few hundred?) on the Lokar products. Bar had be bend a little different in order to clear the header tubes throughout the shifter travel...I think it still rubs a little going into park.
I was able to keep my Column Shifter on my Nova Project. I had issue due to setting the engine as far back as I could. You can see in my build thread starting around post #119 and again on #122

I checked out both Lokar and Shiftworks.. the both had kits to use a straight rod from the column to the trans. But since I moved the engine/trans back.. the Firewall would not allow me to use them. you need a straight line of sight between the two. I didn't want to go the cable route.
So.. I re-engineered my Nova PG setup. Had to move the pivot mounting, create new adjustable rod's and modify the pivot link to extend the width and connection points. Then it was just a matter of getting the right Ratio / Rod Lengths which too a lot of trial and error of adjusting.

Be sure and check out how bczee did his...it's pretty slick...
I kept the column shifter on my 72 Chevelle wagon 5.3/4l60e...I also moved my drivetrain combo down and back.
I added a little length to the rod...and a couple extra bends to get it around the firewall...

I'm running a shiftworks setup for a console. You still need the linkage to the column if you want the shifter to lock. For me it was some cutting and welding on the linkage to get the location, clearance, and angles what I wanted. The linkage is sitting right on top of the header and is very close to it with it in park but it works fine. I would suggest that you wait and not try to tackle it until youget the exhaust in.....

+1 on the Exhaust / Headers, it it mocked up 1st before working with the shifter linkage.. That is one of the other reason I had to tackle modifiying my Shifter.. The Header Colletor was in the way.
