Default overheating??

My 54 chevy with a 5.3 was running cool for thousands of miles till I
installed a heater. It previously ran 190 degrees, it did that all the time.
I have pulled a vacuum on the cooling system, that did not work. It will not run cool even with the heat on. The temp will drop if you bring the rpm's up. Before the cooling system was looped on the water pump. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

How high is the heater core in relation to the level of the engine? If it is too high it may have created an air pocket that pushes into the engine. Have you verified that the heater core actually flows and is not blocked or restricted.

When you drained the fluid out and installed the heater you got air in the system. These heads are bad to hold air pockets. This is what the steam lines are for is to get rid of the air out of the heads. Take the upper radiator hose off and fill the engine from there. This may help fill. There is lots of info on this as well on this forum. Just search for some of the threads and you should be able to get it corrected. This is a common problem with these motors. Good luck.

The heater core is above the engine, but it is blowing hot air. When I pulled a vacuum on the cooling system all the hoses were going flat, that should have removed the air. I have read other post on here. I am going to try the drilling the thermostat, more cap pressure(mine is a 13# cap). The other question is does the water need to flow through the heater core all the time? My heater valve is vacuum operated, only opens when on(but I have had it on trying to make it cool off).

First I would ask if you are using an LS thermo not a small block. The heater valve needs a bypass so that coolant can circulate back to the thermo.

Thanks for the info. I am headed out looking for one now. Do you know if the vacuum opens it to the heater core or closes it? Thanks again, I see you are local.

The heater bypass valve that I am using, when vacuum come on... closes the valve to reciculate back to the pump, and make sure you are using the correct type of t-stat, as tge done operate likeva SBC one.

The 4 way closes to heat and goes into recirculate with vacuum applied. Good luck - I am across the bay in SF
