Default Project Little Bastard-1997 E36 M3 Sedan

Broke one of my many rules by purchasing a car online, out of state, sight unseen. Well after several hoops jumped over, up and around I ended up with THIS for $2,800 all fee's, and shipping. Long story short car is a 3 owner, clean carfax all original/factory bone stock M3 sedan w/auto tranny 235k. More than alittle rough in some places. Looking at doing a full LS-x swap on a very tight budget. Will be doing most, if not all work myself with good photo's and documentation. Thinking a iron 6.0L w/ auto tranny will be the easiest and cheapest to get road worthy, then I will iron out all the small problems everyone seems to run into. Looking for all the advice I can get, thanks again. Hope you enjoy the build!!!

The short answer would be a cheap one I am thinking a 4L80E, but don't want to destroy the original tranny tunnel fitting her in. Any advice as far as auto trannys from the swap crowd in a E36?

I think Unnatrl is in the process of switching from a T-56 to an auto. I don't think there are too many LSx swaps running auto's.

Try bumping Unnatrl's swap thread. Maybe he has some input.

I am going the 4L80e route. It looks like the passenger side unibody rail will have to be clearanced slightly. I haven't tried fitting anything yet as my trans is still getting built. I don't anticipate any major issues. The only E36 auto swap I have found used a 4L60e. They are actually wider than an 80e. He had to modify the shift shaft because it was going to hit the body and notch the unibody frame rail. This being said, if a 60e fits an 80e should be no problem. Keep is posted on what you decide to do. I will post as I figure out what is necessary.

We make E36 LS swap headers, those are great looking 3 series.

I'm amazed you found a clean title M3 for under 3k. Nice find.

Great find. From the pictures it is not clear how bad the rust is. It looks clean. This will be great. Beautiful car.

Steve,

Can you advise a ballpark price? Headers for this swap into an E36 are overly priced in comparison to other vehicles with LS based swaps. Vorschlag teaming with your company seems brilliant from the standpoint of mass production. I suspect mass production with a lower price will yield a nice profit. Let us know!

As I understand it, the only E36 American Racing swap headers offered are the Vorshlag swap headers available only through Vorshlag.

My research says the same, but ARH lists them on their website. Im curious if they will be selling the headers direct instead of going through Vorschlag.

OP-

Cx racing just released a motor and trans mount kit for the E36 swap. Price is very reasonable. Just an FYI.

Best is to email sales@vorshlag.com, but you can also call 972-422-7170.
