Alternator with holley HP EFI

Default Alternator with holley HP EFI

I know the system doesn't hook directly to the alternator but I don't have the stock harness in the car anymore it's the hp harness by I have the alternator hooked to a post on my firewall that is hooked to the battery. I also haver he red wire from the harness that is 12v switched hooked to the alternator as well but how do I get it to charge?

Well I don't know exactly what tells the alternator to charge I think I've heard of some people putting resistors in the wire for it to work

You will need to put a resistor in line with the wire to activate the alternator. It needs to see less then 6 volts when the ignition is turned on. You will fry the alternator if it keeps seeing 12+ volts. The trigger wire on the plug should be in pin location B.

I don't actually have a plug in the alternator I just have the 12v wire mounted to the stud on the alternator, but that just means I need to get a plug and put a resistor in the 12v wire and connect it to terminal or pin B correct?

I was under the impression that when hooked up in this non-factory fashion the alt would be triggered to turn on once the motor hit 2500 rpm or so. I've been curious about how the hp efi handles this myself, it doesn't really say much about it in the literature for it.

When you make these systems stand alone you are not using the ecu to control the alt.
just install a resistor (approx 60-250 ohm, 1/2 watt) from ign to pin b on the alt connector.
This does two things
1 it excites the alt to charge and
2 it limits current when the key is on but the alt is not spinning as the regulator inside
the alt shorts to ground.
Without the resistor you will burn up the regulator inside the alt. Steve

Good thread as this is what I'm working on too. I've seen the "one wire" setups but my parts store fbody alt has a 3 wire plug in it (c5 pigtail IIRC). I've read these alts are hybrids of sorts to fit multiple cars with the same part# and may not wire up the same.
Would anyone have a diagram of some sort?
