we have used mefi 4 to control vvt. The output is not pwm so we usually turn it on at 1500 rpm and off at around 5400.
Mefi 5 has full control over vvt and is able to run man or electric throttle, Etc.
Great build Sean. Steve

Default Excellent Workmanship

I am following this Bug build. I like the idea of that engine. Think you can really get 400 hp?

Updates are coming! I am going to redo the exhaust for the dual muffler setup this weekend. I am still waiting on my floor pan to be made and that is holding me up from doing a lot more. The next 2 months should be a huge step. My goals would be to get the floor pan done, seats mounted, pedals mounted, brake and clutch lines done, shifter and linkage mounted, and most of the interior panels done. Then onto radiator, heat exchanger, and fuel system.

As for my 400hp goal, it has been changed. It would have been no problem with a turbo, but the supercharger is going to limit me. I think it is going to be more like 330-350hp with the supercharger. If I want to add meth, which I don't, I could hit the 400hp mark.

I am thinking on a turbo system for my project but I don't want to go with a meth kit either. Just build what you want to do and can afford and have fun with it. I have never been disappointed in my projects if my primary goal is to just have fun!!

Well I got a little more done today. Not as much as I would like but it is cause of a problem I encountered. The exhaust design had to be changed up. Turns out my V-band clamps didn't fit through the frame how I would like. So now I am stuck with one muffler as pictured and one hiding in the fender. Who knows, might work out better....

This is the half I got done... Way more work to go.

Love the build!

One suggestion as far as intercooling is concerned, is to look into AWIC setups.

You run 2 small lines from your heat exchanger, with a reservoir and pump in the loop, then have your IC core wherever you need it.

That cuts down on IC piping, and allows you to really package things easier.

As far as the A-arm design goes, the fact that you did it all on paper makes me jealous as all heck. I'm spending hours in Inventor dealing with mine...

How bad is that angle for the CV axles?

The angles are not nearly what I hoped for.. The drivers side is sitting at 8 degrees and the passenger is at 5 degrees. I mean its not horrible (the picture makes it look very bad) but I wanted closer to center. The trans is mounted as low as it can go too. Nothing I can do to make it better...

Is the 8 degrees going to cause a problem when the suspension is fully extended? The limit of those CVs is probably around 11-12 degrees...

From everything I have read / figured out, they are good to 25 degrees safely. When I was testing them off the car, they could go 40 degrees without getting any bind. I imagine this is because they are designed for a FWD car. At full droop it is at 15 degrees. So I believe I should be ok. Keep in mind, this is a low HP build with very little weight to push.

Thumbs up

I've gotta agree with a bunch of the others on here - this is a KICK-@$$ build regardless of whether or not it has a V8!! (Of course, my DD has a turbocharged Ecotec 4-banger, so I could be slightly biased...) Can't wait to see it done - and even though I have a strong bias toward turbochargers, I honestly can't fault you for using a blower in this build. The linear power delivery just makes sense for what you're doing.

Now get back to work man, we're waiting to see this thing in action!!!

So it looks like this weekend is going to be header building weekend. I originally planned on having a professional make one but I am having a problem paying someone $750 to build something that only cost $150 in parts. That means this weekend, I will build my first header ever. I figured if I have built this much of the Bug already, how bad can a header be? It is going to be some crazy design and as close to equal length as possible. I am going with 1.75" primary tubing and a 3" collector. Should be good flowing. Wish me luck!

Amazing build!

Regarding your suspension, did you try to design it for good launching, or more for just going around corners well? I'm interested in trying to do something similar to what you have, but to see if it's possible to get the sucker to really launch.

Tjabo,

The suspension is mostly designed for turning. The camber gain rate is a bit more agressive then a normal a-arm car. But at the same time, I can set the rear camber up at 1 degree at ride height and have a very good amount of tire on the ground while still having a good contact patch while doing 1G in the corner with the suspension compressed. The car is light, mid engine, and has sticky tires. The weight is in the right place for a good launch so I doubt I will have traction issues. Sounds good in theory but I guess we will see the real outcome when it is up and running!
