You would think I would have good connections of a header fabricator, but the cheapest quote I got was $750. I am in this header $160. My time is free, a shops isn't. I might not be saying the same thing after I start welding it up....
Wow...for $750, I too would do it myself!! I never would have thought it would be so much...especially for just one header. It's not like we are talking about welding up a set of headers for a V-10 Viper or something!?!?

Anyway...the finished product looks great! Pat yourself on the back...your header looks as good as a set of Hookers! Maybe you found a new calling...building/welding up custom headers...lol!!

Great job...great build!! Keep the pictures coming...and good luck on the rest of your build!

Thanks for all the good comments guys! I am hoping to get the car in its drive-able stage by the end of the year. At this rate, I don't think it is going to be a problem. The Route 66 car show is going to be coming up here soon and I would love to be able to make it! So that is my real goal.

I also got some good news today. My floor pan is done being cut and ready to be picked up! I just hope it fits in my car so I can bring it home to the Bug... If it does, I will post more pictures tonight.

You do know that attaching the floorboards with Gorilla Glue isn't a long-term solution, right??

I used a new type of welder for this (prototype). Its a fusion welder that bonds aluminum to steel. I used Gorilla Glue as the filler. I think it should hold up to 200 MPH, which is on par with duct tape. I got the idea from the Lotus Elise which is held together by epoxy but I one-upped them with the Gorilla Glue!

On a side note, I think I am going to drill some holes in it and bolt it to the tabs that are sitting under it just for the extra support (not that I don't trust the glue)

It looks so strange not seeing a transmission tunnel.

I agree. Every car I have owned has had some kind of lump in the floor. I do like the flat floor though. Carpet is going to be a simple install! Seats are going to be easy to mount too. The thing I like most about it, is that I can mount my pedals to the floor and not hang them.

Update -

Floor is in and mounted

Exhaust is fully made from header to tail pipe. Just need to finish welding and notch the fender a little for the exhaust outlet.

Next -

Buy and mount seats, pedals and shifter.

good progress - I've been following without posting. Wilwood has a cool new floor mount pedal setup. Have you seen it? It isn't terribly expensive. The tilton one is more.

Yes I have seen the Wilwood setup. It looks very nice with the black pedals. I did find a set a bit cheaper from CNC. Not quite the same quality but can't beat the price. It is like $250 for the clutch and brake part and another $100 for the gas pedal. The Wilwoods are like $100 for each pedal plus master cylinders.

I can give you some pointers on front mounting a discrete radiator, it helps with weight balance and keeps the rad in the air flow. I've been running it for years now and have dialed it in quite nicely, clean and neat. Email me to chat if you'd like. If you scroll down this page you'll get to the section about cooling.

1.8t Mid Engine Bug

Yes, there is a radiator in there, doesn't need the lip.

Really awesome build, your HP numbers will blow you away already.

not to hijack the thread, but how much cheaper are the prices on the atech site versus summit? I was looking at the qualifications to become a dealer and it says something about an initial buy in and/or yearly minimum. any idea on how much that is?

I do have some questions for you! Nice to see someone else as crazy as me. I read through your thread and like the build. Too bad you are too far away to see it in person.

What spring rates are you using and how much does your Bug weigh?
