Default Smaller Power Steering Pulley

I need a smaller PS pulley for the truck power steering pump. Put a 5.3 with truck accessories into a 1971 chevelle. Like others the stock pulley is to large and hits on the power steering box.

I read many different threads and it looked like Dorman 300-201 was the only answer... But it is plastic and seemed like you needed to press it on the shaft much further. I ended up buying Dirty Dingo's smaller pulley. Turns out that is just a dorman 300-201 pulley that they chage $30 extra for….

I'm wondering if anyone has found a good solution, and preferrably a pulley that isn't plastic? I want to reuse the stock accessories since I have them already.

I haven't tried it, but I've heard of people using a Monte Carlo v6 3.8l pulley. It is not as small as the 300201, but it is smaller then the truck pulley and it is steel. Might be worth looking into. Rock auto has it listed as a dorman 300130.

After you resolve the pulley issue, probably wise to add a PS cooler if there isn't one. That smaller pulley's gonna heat the fluid up quicker.

I wouldn't worry about plastic unless you're turning 7000rpm.
Been running the 300-201 for years as a DD.
Look up the history of f body PS coolers before you add one of those.

When I did mine I also installed a 25% underdrive crankshaft pulley/dampner. This also slowed the P/S pump back down.

How do you get the pulley off? I had to press it on so far that a PS puller would no longer be able to reach and remove the pulley. Plus it still needed to go on further because it wasn't quit lined up yet... I think i have seen where some put washers on the front side of the pump to move it further back. I might try this.

I will probably try the 300-130 and see which fits better.

I had the 300-201 pulley on my swap (S10 truck acc) & kept having issues with the pumps going out & contributed it to the smaller pulley & heard of a few guys that had the pulley come apart turning high rpm.

I went to this bracket & never looked back, works great & runs stock 5.3 pulley.

Default steering pulley

I just put a 5.3 into my 76 skylark. same problem with pulley steering box clearance. I used dorman 300-130 for a 3.8 v-6. I had to put 2 washers at each of the mounting points between pump & bracket. pressed pulley on further then the belt lined up great. bracket on back will have to be modified. cut & shorten weld back together. hope this helps you out.

Im cut some 0,200" aluminum spacers between the pump and bracket. That way the PS pulley could be used to reach it if needed.
Pic of install on my Olds threaf.

Thought i would update this thread. I tried both the 300-201 and 300-130. the 130 pulley works much better. It is steal, so won't break, and fits on the truck PS pump better. The 130 pulley is slightly larger than the 201, but it still has plenty of clearance with the steering box. Because of the larger size it doesn't have issues with the bolts on the PS pump, as when using the 201 i have seen people have to use lower profile bolt heads.

Hope this helps people out in the future.

300-202 is the metal version of the 201. I just ordered one to try out on the swap my brother-in-law and I are working on.

A few years ago. Many were using the pulley from late 80's E-150 vans. Search and you'll see many threads.

The different contour of the pulley can contact the pump snout before it lines up correctly with the pump in the original location.
I use 0.2" aluminum spacers between the pump and bracket. You can barely see one in the upper bolt in the pic below.
I also replace the taller hex head bolts with lower profile button head to clear the pulley.

I do something similar. I have a .2" washer that just fits over the pump shaft, and I use it while pressing on the pulley to seat it .2" beyond that end of the pump shaft. Works every time.
