Default Please explain cooling system...

What do you think about this radiator for my standard LM7? You think it will work? Its a standard engine and i will keep it that way.

I realize im not so good at cooling systems… Is this the easiest way or how do you think i should do? Am i missing something?

Hope i don't seem to stupid now...

Looks more like an overflow than surge. Difference is overflow is just that. Surge is high spot in cooling system and part of the systems' coolant flow path.
Only flow of reflow tank sees is burping of high pressure coolant when things get hot and then as cooling happens vacuum draws fluid back in to radiator.
I'd ask:

1. What is the high point (where air will collect when filling)? If radiator then you just need an overflow. 13 lb cap would be good.
2. If the surge tank will be highpoint you'd use a higher pressure cap on radiator and 13 on surge tank.
3. Another consideration... Where will you attach steam vent? This needs to be within pressurized system. Overflow tank is not pressurized... Just atmospheric

Ok, thanks but what is the better way to go? The radiator sits pretty high in the car and i haven't desided where to put the overflow tank.

And what is the best way to solve the steam vent issue?

This is very simple and covered here on countless threads. A search on steam vent will have you reading for hours if you choose.

If the radiator tank and pressure relief cap are the high spot, I'd only install an overflow. It is exactly what I did and works great. I used an overflow from a Sububran and bought it new on Amazon for $15.

If there is another high spot in your system, that won't work. I'd then install a surge tank.

As for the inline steam vent, it works great. I built one with 1 1/2" AL tubing and a -6AN male bung that I welded to the tube. See photos. Or you can buy similar from Jagsthatrun.com

Hope that helps!

Ok this is great. Now that i know what to search for i have a lot to read… Not always easy to search in another language :-)

But what to do if i want to use a heater in the car? Can i just use the in- and outs- on the water pump?

Check out this. Probably will answer every other question.

I use the vintage air heater controller inline in one of the water heater lines. Pay special attention to the water flow and directions on your heater controller valve. Some of the valves only work in one specific direction.

Yes i looked at that page and it was really helpful. But on the simplest one where they only use a overflow tank they don't have a heater.

I just wonder if i can go straight from the in- and out-lines on the water pump directly to the heater?

I will take a shot at this one. Why wouldn't you use the heater ports?

But in some of the drawings the heater hoses is routed thru the surge tank. Just don't want to get it wrong.

I really appreciates the help.

In that case you would just eliminate the surge tank and use the heater in and heater out ports of the water pump as depicted in the diagram to go directly to and from the heater core.

With a newborn and some spine surgery its hard to find the time but this i some of what i done.

I was able to use standard hoses from a Silverado. Just had to shorten them. For the steam vent i got a adapter for a temp sensor that im able to use.
