LS7 and 200r4 trans
LS7 and 200r4 trans What would I have to do to make a 200r4 live behind an LS7 engine? I know allot of you guys are probably like why would you want to do this... Well I have a 1984 Hurst Olds cutlass with lightning rods and to retain there functionalty I'd have to keep the 200r4 trans unless you all know how to make the linkage work on a 4L70e.
The bracket on the pan bolts of a 200-4R bolts right onto the 700-R4 and 4L60-E. I don't know about the 4L70-E for sure. But let's face it, you just need a Hurst on a TR6060 to keep it real.
Lol at tremic 6-speed check the old classifieds I sold one last year, the bracket wasn't too big of a concern I knew I could make that work my concern would it line up correctly internally. Ex. When I shift to drive would it actually be fully engaged in drive internally in the transmission, same with reverse and so on. If you note on an aftermarket shiftee the gear select linkage that bolts to the side of the trans has different holes for different applications

The detent throw is the same on 4L60. Probably 70 too. The 4L80 is different.

The Buick Grand National came with the 200R4. It can hold some serious power. I think the shifting issue has probably been sorted out to some degree but will require fine tuning on your part. A good transmission shop could probably get you in the ball park.
I was very into Buick GN's in the late 90's and built a couple GN powered RX-7's that went mid 11's with a stock turbo and not even locking up the convertor. Biggest hold back was the chip tuning as I just ran whatever was cheap. I commuted to work in this every day and did a few SoCal 800 mile round trips without issues. http://grannys.tripod.com/markcorbett.html
Not all TH200-4R's are created equal. Only the '86-87 Buick GN/TType I believe had the BRF valvebody which is where a lot of the shifting magic comes from. Plenty of my friends went hog wild with a fully built billet internals and even with those upgrades they routinely had transmission issues when pushed hard in 600rwhp+ Buick GN V6 turbo setups weighing 3500lbs+.
I would try to make a 4L80E work and never look back. Some basic upgrades should be able to handle 800rwhp for a while. The internals of a 4L80E make the TH200-4R look like little twigs.
If you got a manual valvebody installed couldn't you use the Lightning rods then with some mods?
