The Best V8 Stories One Small Block at Time
Hello,
Oh my. Seats for 20 bucks each out of a 95 Pontiac Grand Prix SE - fits my 70 El Camino perfectly. Great condition, my desired color and clean. Jeep Grand Cherokee steering box upgrade to give me better road feel and solve a leaky Pitman arm seal - 50 bucks.
New AC Delco Multec fuel injectors are about $140 each at the auto parts store but they are only ten bucks in the yards around here. A quick test for good impedance and then bring them home for internal pressure cleaning. Works great.
Random other good things not worth mentioning but yea, I sure like a good walk through the yards. I have a better steering wheel now than in the picture. And I'd like a tilt steering column for a 68-72 A-body but I'm not likely to find one of those in the junk yard.

So one of my best junk yard buys is not really cheap but much less than the aftermarket. I bought a pair of 2014 VW GTI bucket seats for my 68 C10 project. Paid $250 for the pair. Gray in color. A bit faded but otherwise perfect shape. The gray didn't work for me so I used fabric spray bomb to turn them black. Turned out great.
I have also discovered that Nissan Altima/Maxima coooling fans from many model years are almost a direct bolt on to a 28" wide older GM radiator core. They have 2 dual speed motors and move ALOT of air. The two speed motors are very simple to re-wire. 1 coil = low speed and 2 coils = high speed. Using the Nissan fan assembly saves me space in my aftermarket fuse box I use to convert my factory harness to stand alone. Only requires 2 relays to have dual 2 speed fans where the GM method requires 3 relays. This gives me the space to add a relay to invert the brake signal from the old style brake switches.
Seems like such a random mix of parts. I never would have thought to go in that direction.
Found a floor shift tilt column out of a late 2nd gen Firebird at the JY, So, I used the lower shaft and lower S-10 tilt column (firewall mount is vehicle specific), paired with the top section of the Firebird tilt column (with no column shift mount). I removed the column shift arm from the engine compartment side inner tube to keep everything in position. The upper shaft is from an '09 Buick Lucerne, the lock plate and clock spring are from a '95 Grand prix with steering wheel controls and the steering wheel is a leather wrapped Cobalt LT wheel with steering wheel controls.
I got the idea for this from Camaro Rick on Youtube. He put a later C6 (?) steerring wheel on his '94 Camaro which uses a similar Saginaw (IIRC) column as my truck.
The only thing I still need to do, is make an adapter ring of sorts to go between the column and the steering wheel. There's about a 7/8" gap between the wheel and the column. I'll probably order some 1" think King Starboard or Expanded PVC to make it.
I plan to use an Arduino to interface with the steering wheel audio controls and possibly the cruise control buttons to send the correct signals to the PCM for the cruise to still work.
Installing it is a ways off. lol
