Default E38 ECM. what trans can be used? best place to buy harrness also?

I called SPEARTECH and they wanted to sell me a complete kit for close to $1700. I would rather use my own computer. Its all from a 2014 GM vehicle.
I did not buy the trans when I bought the motor. The motor is complete with wire harness and all, but I would rather buy a pre made harness.

can a 4L65E work? Not sure what was in the 3500 full size HD van, when it was pulled. All I really know is that its a 2014 Vortec with VVT and I would Like to keep the VVT.
Has anyone used PSI harness? Thanks

I have the GTO E38 and harness, running a 4L60 but I am pretty sure the 4L65s are no different except for some of the internals.

Mine came with a Transmission Control Module though. I don't know if the E38 can run one without the separate TCM

If the van was an HD it probably had a 4L80

Thanks. Im not sure a L80 would fit in the tunnel of the 80 Bird. I keep reading the L65E is a great swap for my application.

Is there any way to find out if the ECM is only dedicated to what ever was in the van, or if Certain types of trans can be used with the E38? Thanks again.

I bought a Brand New GM performance 490 LS3 and the GM performance super magnum T56 for the bird. I have changed my mind and am putting them in my 70 bird. Im putting the LS2 and automatic in the 80 now. Just going to be a fun cruiser..

The 3500 might of had a 6L80E as well. That's what mine has and it's from a 2010 Express 3500. E38 ECM, TCM is built into the trans. You can get other transmissions, but you will need a TCM as well. Not sure how that talks to an E38. I'm sure plenty on here have done it. I don't know why you would want to spend the money on a pre made harness when you already have one. The wiring is very straight forward. I have all the diagrams from mine if you want to diy.

Thanks!! But when it comes to wiring, Ill burn my own house or car down.
Would it be cheaper to have my wiring redone?? On the LS3 I bought the GM performance 3 wire hook up!. Should be real easy to install.

No, the ECM is not dedicated to the transmission in the van.

If you are going 4L60E, 4L65E, or 4L70E (same transmission, updated internals) you can use a T42 transmission controller. I've done this with an E38 PCM and had good success. As long as the T42 TCM has the proper OS on it, it will control the transmission properly. Once wired to the E38, they will communicate with each other and life is good.

I have an LS3 and 4L60e. Originally, my Corvette sourced LS3 came with it's original E38. I bought a 4L60e (sourced from a 2002 Z28) and T42 from a 2008 Silverado 5.3 2wd. The E38 was flashed to specs from the same truck. I could never get it to shift right or work correctly using a popular vendor here who insisted it should all work. I also couldn't find anyone else running my exact combo successfully. I ended up going with Speartech after a frustrating year trying to sort it all out. They switched me to an E40 and T42 from a Trailblazer SS along with a new harness and pedal. All was finally right in the world. I agree it was mega expensive, but worked correctly from the first turn of the key.

I sold the E38, T42, pedal, etc. and got some money back. I'd never use another manufacturer for a harness.

I would've rather went with the 6L80e, but also didn't want to cut the tunnel. If I was doing it all over again, I would cut it up and go from there.

The T42 has to be flashed to the proper calibration to get it all to work. I've done it and it works perfectly. I actually have two T42's I flashed to 2007 4L60E calibration sitting on my bench and one is waiting on me to change to an E38 for a project I'm building.

You could have had the wrong transmission calibration on the T42 because they are not all the same.

Another thing is a 2002 Camaro 4L60E doesn't have an Input Speed Sensor and a 2008 4L60E does. This will play havoc with the drivability unless you can turn it off or have the Input Speed Sensor properly installed in the front pump and connected to the TCM.

This ^^^ I used a 4L80E with E38 and T42. As noted, the E38 + T42 can control the transmissions above as well. You can find the T42 in a bunch of salvage yard cars for next to nothing. I've seen them in Malibu's, Saturns and other front wheel drive cars. Just make sure you have the right OS loaded and the correct pin out. The T42 has a bunch of wires to connect, mostly to the NSS, transmission valve body, VSS and Output shaft speed sensor. There are not many wires between the E38 and T42....only ones I can think of are the + and - GMLAN twisted pair.
