Sorry about the motor -- every time I read a story like this I'm glad I made the choice to go with a new crate motor. And I really like your exhaust exit option -- that was my choice too!

I appreciate the sentiment - although I think Mr. Lutz' best started slipping down hill after his involvement with BMW's 3.0CS and the first 3-series back in the early 70's. Volvo isn't big enough to contain his ego....
Back to Porsche's making V8 sounds - to the OP - what are you thinking about for the next motor?

So what caused the valves to hit the piston? Obviously that contact caused the piston to break, which sent a rod flying wildly into the surrounding block area, which broke rods, etc.
I had this happen to me in 2015, root cause was a broken valve spring that allowed a valve to drop and kiss the piston. Yours looks like they both hit the piston multiple times...

engine was not broken in properly and wife over rev'd it at 6-7K rpms at startup. WOT at startup on a zero mile motor and rings not set in can not be a good thing. Car had been running for 2 months with multiple start up and light rpm reving or 1 or 2min with no problems.. Think the rod snapped which caused the piston to hit the valves. The heads were fresh along with new Lunatti springs. Retainer and valves are still intact and don't appear to be bent. I need to pull them out of the head next to see if they are bent. regardless will replace to be safe.

Yea I'm still scratching my head on what happened. I did pull the valves from that cylinder today. Springs and valve keepers had no anomalies but did confirm the exhaust valve got bent. The keepers did take some persuading and tapping on the valve to get them to release from the retainer but popped out once tapped. Is that normal?
I speculating possibly the valve floated and collided with the piston

Haven’t updated this build thread in a very long time since I mostly provide my updates on the Facebook Swapped Porsche group but for those of you not following FB here is a quick update
Refreshed LS2 installed and very healthy
PCM remapped
All gauges working (water temp stops at 175 which I suspect air bubbles
A/C holds pressure but not vacuum and have yet to find a leak
Rear quarter has been pulled out
Body mods started
3pcs wheels refurbished and fitted with rubber
Left rear control arm and thrust arm bent and needs replaced. Was having a serious toe in issue.

Wow. What a build. I am throwing in a LS1 into my 996 and will be taking some ideas and advice from this thread. I'm in the FB swaps group also but would really like to see you post an update! I followed your other build on Pelican (IIRC) and also really enjoyed it. Bummer about the first motor but this exhaust sounds great! Nice work.
