Need transmission recommendations

Need transmission recommendations Recently got a 85 c10 with a ls1 in it. the motor runs perfectly, aside from the previous owners "custom" wiring. He had stated that you have to go through every gear manually but it has a 4L80E transmission. And finally driving it I have come to that it does not have reverse or overdrive in the gears. Personally I don't care if it has reverse or not but I'd like to have it as my daily driver, I'm thinking of changing out the tranny, and if I do should I just go for the same type? Or go with a different type? Please sent some ideas my way!
It all depends on what your goals are, and what the rest of the truck is like. It's a 4 speed OD, so if the gears match your use, there's no reason not to use it. Swapping like for like is a lot easier than adapting something new.
But, the question is, why doesn't the current transmission work correctly? The 4L80E is an electronically controlled unit. And the truck has a "custom" wiring harness. Is the wiring correct to control the unit? Maybe that's why there's no OD or revers, and why it won't shift on it's own. If you simply swap in a new transmission, you could be right back where you started, except tired and poorer.
I'd spend some time sorting out the wiring and trans controls before doing anything else.
