1987 944 Turbo --> LS
#281
Bit of a winter update. Replaced my front orange indicator lenses with some clear lenses. Also realigned my rear bumper so it sits straight, has been bugging me for years. No pictures of that stuff, sort of boring cosmetic stuff.
Replaced my stock rubber steering rack bushings with some stiffer delrin blue ones:
I also installed a fuel pressure gauge, so that meant reorganizing the gauge layout on the centre console:
I had to lengthen the fuel line going to the rail to account for the sensor fitting (brass fitting with wire coming out of it).
I also upgraded my fuel pump from the stock 944 Turbo unit (blue) to a Bosch 044 pump. For the 044 I ditched the banjo style check valve that comes with the pump and used a -06 Quantum check valve instead, this let me use a free flow AN fitting coming out of the pump.
While I had things apart I replaced the fuel filter/regulator and used better fittings than the black clip on ones. I read the clip on ones may leak, I didn’t have any issues but better safe than sorry.
Also noticed the filter/regulator that came out had a huge dent in it. No idea how I missed that when installing it, I was pretty tired rushing to get it out last spring, but I’m sure I would have noticed that. There’s nothing that could have dented it where it’s mounted, no movement in the mount. It’s possible a stone or marble on the track could have bounced up and hit it (it’s mounted above the half shaft) but seems unlikely.

Alright, now time for a more interesting update. The biggest thing you’ll hear from 944 people when you tell them you’re going to LS swap is “you’re going to add too much weight and ruin the balance of the car”.
I had a chance to corner scale my car again, and here’s the results:
In 2016 before the LS2 swap my car weighed 2942 lbs.
In 2019 after the LS2 swap my car weighed 2935 lbs.
Other changes since the “before” 2016 weight include a fibreglass hood (weight savings), Enkei rims instead of 993 Hollow Spokes (weight savings), 265 width front tires instead of 235 front tires (weight gain) and 996 GT3 front calipers and 330mm Cayenne rotors (weight gain). Both measurements were taken with a 1/2 tank of gas. So it’s pretty much a wash, no weight gained!

TWO things some people forget- (1)the 944 4-cyl. is a BOAT ANCHOR for what it is, and (2) they forget the LS is an aluminum block, or should be (hopefully not an iron truck block).
Pretty cool the weight comes out like it does, huh?

I knew it would be close after I had a chance to drive it on track, I couldn’t feel any noticeable difference. I didn’t know it would be that close, but I could tell I didn’t add 100lbs to the nose.

That’s a custom fuel pressure gauge from speed hut:
https://www.speedhut.com/
I tried to design it to look as close to the other VDO gauges as I could.

Had some clicking from a CV joint make itself heard over the last few track days. Funnily enough it was from an axle assembly that was installed new probably 8 years ago, the other axle looks factory original and seems OK. Sure enough, the clicking culprit was stiff and almost completely jamming on some angles of articulation when I removed it. I was probably pretty close to making a ball bearing donation to one of the corners at the track. Why waste an opportunity to upgrade?

Amazing service. Quick communication, they beat their estimate for delivery by a huge margin, and the shipping was fair and the packaging outstanding. I knew they were well known when I ordered from them, but the fact that they treat a small new customer so nicely says a lot about their business.
