Default 1990 Isuzu Pickup LSx. 4L60, T56, T5, NV3500, NV4500?

I am just starting an LSx swap into a 1990 Isuzu 2WD pickup. I think this would be about the same as swapping into a 2WD Rodeo or Amigo. I did read a bit on a LS1 Rodeo in Australia, but the story was missing some info.

I was about to buy a 2000 Camaro SS donor with a 4L60E but I would really like to have a manny tranny. I have read that a T5 might work behind a stock LS1, but this seems like it might not be the best idea. Of the trannies I listed, I would think the T5 takes up the least space. I don't really think I need or want 2 overdrives so i think the T56 is kinda overkill, and pricey of course. How do a NV3500 and NV4500 compare in size to a T56 or 4L60? I put a 4L60E/4.8 in a Mercedes and had to do a lot of cutting on the trans tunnel. I would like to avoid cutting the tunnel at all.

I have 31" from the firewall to the rear of the core support. I think I could find another 4" if I mod the grille and get rid of the hood latch and go with hood pins.

Any ideas are appreciated. BTW, I have documented 2 other swaps on LS1tech, The aforementioned MB and a 5.3 powered Jeep CJ7 body mounted on a C4 chassis.

One more crazy idea is to use a 3.7 inline 5 from a Colorado. Apparently they make 242hp, which is only about 40 away from a 4.8. Anyone know the length on one of those? I read the 4.2 I6 version of that motor is only 32 inches long.

Here is a picture of a 1982 Mitsubishi Mighty Max that I did a Mustang 5.0 swap to in the 90s. Trying to relive my youth, haha.

The nv3500 is comparable in size to a 4l60e, the nv4500 is larger, cast iron case heavy *****!

Check out the first gear ratio on the NVs, great if you're crawling.
What rear end ratio will you be using?

So, did this all work out? I just wrapped up my 5.3 swap into my 90 Isuzu pickup. To call it a challenge would be a profound understatement. I’m glad it’s done though. I went with a 4l60e instead of manual. I sort of wish I’d have gone with a manual, but so far so good with the auto.
