Default LSx Cobra

Last year I really wanted a SVT Cobra for my Birthday so I spent a few weeks shopping around, I missed out on the 03 I was going for so that left me with 3 options. A Cheap Cobra that needed body work, a Yellow cobra with ugly wheels and clear coat issues.. and this one.

Sitting in my color, with a cammed LSx sold me despite my brain saying *DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER*

Its a 99 Cobra with something like 100k miles on it, a 5.3l/4l60E combo, cam and duel exhaust under the stock manifolds.

I figured this combo would be more fun to drive then a stock-ish 4.6 4 valve while I decided what to do with the car, I had planned to drop a terminator motor for it but over the last few months I been thinking about just buying another Mustang for that motor.

Heres the car after I bought it.

Shortly after owning the car I got it up on a lift to investigate the leaking front main seal I was told went bad after the cam swap, nope! honestly Im supprised they got the motor in this thing with the stock K-member, but the oil pan is a cut and welded truck pan and the pan gasket is done, so it leaks oil pretty good. Im going to order a AJE K-member and F-body pan to fix, because theres no way to pull the pan without pulling the motor or dropping the stock K-member.

The first major problem I had was an extremely unsafe fuel system, when up on the lift I noticed the fuel lines looked horrible!

I was able to pull the return line off with a slight tug, the feed was pushed on fittings with no clamps or anything. The drain tapped into the fuel hat was lose, with no seal. Terrible! I ended up moving the Vette regulator to the front of the engine bay and ran some AN lines from the tank to the front of the car and sealed everything up.

Next up, probably a real killer for most people. I started to wonder about why this car was LS swapped, the guy said it sat for a few years cuz the girl who owned it didn't "think" it ran. So one day I decided to measure car on the frame machine, the tear on the Apron always made me curious as it was one of the Red flags when I got the car. Turns out the front end was shoved over 13mm, the core support was replaced and done terribly, no rebar was on the car. Yuck!

It took about 4 hours just to get the car clamped on the Frame machine because the pinch welds had been jacked up so many times incorrectly they became flat along the floor, After straightening the pinch welds out I pulled the front end back over and cleaned up a bunch of the welds on the **** core support install.

I pulled the car off the frame machine with a new leash on life, drove an hour to pick up new wheels. Was not a fan of the ones it came with, they looked good at some angles and terrible at others. A set of 18 inch FR500s cured that.

Recently the water pump died, the car had a custom truck water pump modified to an F-body house, I was forced to get a truck water pump for now and make this dumb hose work at the cost of my already **** hot air intake, When the pump went the car got hot and pissed dexcool all over my motor.. Why the **** it had Dexcool in it.. ill never know. I decided it was time to re-do the wiring harness, move the PCM and get a real cold air intake on the car.

Today I moved this joke of a relay setup.

Cut the terrible white ground and power wires out and started to label things, swap to red and black colors.

Tomorrow I get to dig this wire out, I thought it went from a relay to the fuse box.. nope! into the cabin, the lone wire on the driver side they added.

Starting to look better without that junk over the battery.

The New Edge cars are looking pretty appealing these days compared to foxes. I have considering getting one. They are cheaper and less rusty than foxes.

I love the way the new edge looks, but a huge thing for me is how comfortable it is! Iv had so many f-bodys and while comfortable, the Cobra feels much nicer for every day driving. This is my first Ford after 8 years of owning nothing but GM sports cars, and I like it enough to buy another one.

To expand on it more now that im home, im pretty confident the car was wrecked in the passenger fender, pushing the front end over and causing the other damage, and then it sat. Then the previous owner got the car wrecked and cheap as an excuse to do a LS swap. The front two fenders have been replaced recently, I can still see the keystone stickers on the inside.. and the paint, while not matching.. on white is clean.

Today was fun. After some digging I found the relay that was missing the fuse went to the fan, The previous owner told me the high speed fans didnt work for some reason or another.. I think because it was a "Ford fan". Well thats not the case.

After running the wire back to the PCM...

If you can't read my chicken scratch, the exciter wire for the relay was the TCC Brake signal switch..

In yesterdays post I talk about chasing a blue wire into the cabin, here is the results!

I don't like that turn, I expected it to go up.

Oh boy..

Pls no...

Yup, this is happening.

So they ran the signal wire from the PCM on the right side of the engine bay, to a relay on the left side of the engine bay, then from that relay into the cabin, out to the trunk and spliced into the fuel pump harness.
