Default Compressor Compatible with Stock LS1 A/C System

I am in the middle of swapping the drive-train et al from a 2000 Z28 SS into a 1973 Stingray. We're looking to drop the engine/trans in this weekend, but I'm presuming I'll have the same issues most have had needing to relocate the low mounted compressor, and I haven't been able to nail down which compressor to use. As far as I can tell my best options are Sanden's and that it'll be one of their variable compressors (508 or SD7 series?), but I'd love a little guidance as to which would be my best choice.

tldr; I'm looking into which high mount compressor will be most compatible with the rest of the components from a Z28's stock A/C system.

If you're using the stock A/C parts, I believe you'll need a fixed displacement compressor. The f-body is a variable displacement unit. I'm no A/C expert...

Check out the Holly high mount bracket for your old R4 compressor. No need to change much with that.

Though the '73 did originally have a/c, the duct work was the only thing left by the time I got it. That part of why I'm looking to bring in the rest of the z28's a/c system, but I still need to figure out which is the best high mount compressor to mesh it with.

If you need evaporator, heater core, condenser too, you're probably better off going with an aftermarket setup like Vintage or Classic Air. They'll come with a fixed sanden compressor that you can use with an aftermarket bracket, like the Holley. Much easier to fit in a system made for the vet vs trying to stuff in parts not made for it.

Honestly you can run a Variable compressor on any type of a/c system. I retrofitted a V7 in place of my DA6 on my old G-van when the DA6 quit. At full stroke the V7 had a higher pumping capacity than the DA6 which made the blow colder at idle. When it was cruising down the highway, the variable compressor also made it stay consistently colder by reducing the pumping capacity, eliminating the need for the compressor to cycle off.

The OLD GM STV/POA systems attempt to do this as well, but simply vary the refrigerant flow back to a fixed displacement compressor. They were however calibrated for R12 and I would recomeend a STV/POA bypass kit. An expansion valve system, combined with a variable compressor would work GREAT in any vehicle.

I used a sanden sd7 .its small, rated for high rpm, and cools my 83 cutlass just fine . It was 95 out fri and the therm I have stuck in the vent said 38.
