I just pulled this off of my truck engine this weekend. It had a part number stamped on it, part number 12578463 "Stop. Fuel Injection."

It may be a guard to protect the rail during the engine installation rather than for accidents.

Never thought about that, but that does sound like a more plausible theory. Would explain why trucks only have one on them, maybe the way they're installed at the factory only one rail would come close to bumping anything, and they saved money by not using two.
