Default Advice on an LS Swap

Hello,

I have a Ford Ranger that's built for desert racing. It's fully caged, full long travel suspension, Ford 9", Wildwood Brakes, etc... The only thing I'm missing is the engine. I'm ready to start my swap but I'm in between a 5.3 or a 6.0 swap. I'm hoping to get some advice for my plans for the truck and narrow down the path. The truck will be running 37s. My plan is to buy a whole donor engine/transmission, mount it in the truck, run it for about a year, and then rip it out to do a full tear down and performance build. Seems like everyone is leaning towards the LQ4. What should I look for in finding a used engine? Any specific year or out of a specific vehicle?

Thanks a lot guys!

I attached a picture of my ranger as well!

Bigger is better especially normally aspirated. LQ4 or better yet a LQ9 or imo do a aluminium 6.0 or better a aluminum 6.2.

For something that sees airtime, get an aluminum block. Whatever you choose, you’re gonna want to save that extra 100lbs off the front of that thing.

I like Gen IV engines. I would lean towards an aluminum block 6.2L variant.
