Default Best cam for setup...

Hey guys and gals, I’m new to the forum and just did some searching through a few forums but didn’t see an answer specific to my combo...

so I have an 87 mustang coupe (notch)
Im doing a 5.3 swap into the car but before I drop the motor in I want to swap out the cam for something that’s going to make some good NA power
motor is a 5.3, Victor jr carb intake, MSD 6LS setup..
car weighs probably around 3000# and I’m going to be running it on the street only there’s no tracks near me.
stock heads milled .010 with upgraded springs so comp ratio is around 9.5-10:1..stock internals, speed engineering long tubes, Turbo 400, 8.8 with 3.55 gears
cars going to be carbed but I don’t have a carb yet and I’m also buying a new converter so my options are open in that category...
looking for the best cam swap for a street car with that setup that’s going to push me into the 400s HP wise that would benefit from ported heads in the future...

any ideas/comments would be great...even if you can tag old links I’ll do the reading on my own just need to be pointed in the right direction

i was looking at comp cams 54-416-11 but it seems kind of small compared to a lot of cams guys are running

thanks

No smog to worry about on the street in your state?

This cam is badass but you need to run a 3600 converter and will need to make sure you've got the piston to valve clearance for it since you've been milled.

They also have a stage 2 which is a bit smaller.

no smog on an 87 just a safety at that point...since im running on the street as a weekend brusier I don't need to be too radical but I still want some decent power...running stock 1.7:1 rockers now...I can get any converter and carb right now since I don't have one for the 5.3.

Any input on that COMP 54-416-11 cam ??

Ive been doing a lot of 5.3 best cam swap searches and finding these guys are getting almost 100+HP on the dyno with a cam swap....another one I just saw was the COMP 54-454-11...that seems real big but im not used to LS cams with 600 lifts...

so does anyone have any other cams or opinions that will work in a 100% street mustang notchback with a basically stock 5.3, turbo 400 and 3.55 gears??

For a 5.3, cams with about .550 lift would do a good job for a street vehicle, making it easier on the valvetrain.

A little on the small side, and not the best specs for most performance carburetor setups.
I've made over 400 horsepower with a similar sized cam on an otherwise stock 5.3, but that was a very well optimized fuel injection setup.

what stall would you guys who like the Cam Motion little chopper recommend?

228R isn't a bad cam, and would work Ok with a carb if you got the 110 LSA version.
The little chopper is going to sound better, and likely perform better all around for a carburetor.

Thanks NovaJoe, I’m definitely going with the little chopper and a new set of valve springs and pushrods..recommend going to an LS2 timing chain and new oil pump while I’m in there?

ill be looking for a 2800-3200 stall also for a turbo 400..

I'd say that's all preference. I always use stock pushrods, chain, oil pump, etc without any issues.
If yours are super high mileage and you don't trust them, changing them might not be a bad idea.

3200 stall is typically a nice sweat spot for your average cammed LS engine.

Hey JoeNova, would that little chopper cam be good with EFI also?? I was just at the local speed shop and they told me about a FiTech standalone harness and ECU for $800 that works plug and play with the factory intake/injectors etc...
