Default LM7 into 71 Nova issues

Hi guys. Swapping a LM7 into a 71 Nova. I wanted to see how low the rear sump would hang before changing out the pan.

The only issue is the front of the pan is resting on the cross member before the mounts get seated where I can put the motor mount bolt through them. I am using the original frame mounts that were in the Nova. And I am using Jeg's LS engine mount kit with rubber mounts.

At first I was thinking, ok as expected i am having oil pan clearance issues with the truck pan, but this is the front part of the pan, not the rear sump. So I then started looking at the mounts.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

You're using a generic mount kit, and you didn't say whether or not your car has V8 or 6 cylinder mounts in it, but at any rate you will probably have to shim the stands up if the front of the pan is hitting. That said, even when that does clear, the rear is going to be WAY to low below the crossmember. You would be better off getting an oil pan made for your application.

This is why Holley coordinates the WHOLE setup.
Use their mounts, their pan, their crossmember, and if desired their headers/exhaust.
Yes, it costs more INITIALLY, but it WILL all fit and work together instead of haphazardly mixing/matching parts and hoping for the best.

+1 to G Atsma. You also make no mention about concern for drive line angles towards the differential. Holley makes all of this easy with their mounts, their 302-2 pan and their Blackheart LS swap headers. No muss, no fuss with any of this for my 70 El Camino.

Thanks man! I mainly put the stuff that came to mind quickest, but what you said adds a LOT!
BTW, if your name above is what you have done, my hat's off to you! Thank you!

I used the Hooker mount kit, now Holley. I used a Mast pan, Holley pan was not yet out.
V8 Nova's had two frame bracket choices. Small block and Big block.
The big block stands (which I used) mount the engine about 1/2 to 3/4" towards the pass side and mount the engine lower than the small block stands.
So if you have BB stands, the truck pan will hit the crossmember.
No matter, the rear sump will practically drag the ground.

Ditto on the Holley recommendation. Very nice parts that fit. The Holley pans will also clear the crossmember.

I just installed a 7qt Moroso pan, and had to notch the crossmember to clear.

Good luck with the project!

Like the other have said use the Holley mounts and pan at minimum
Keep in mind that the 68-74 Nova and 67-69 Camaro had the same subframes and are rear steer. The truck pan fits with a slight crossmember notch but hangs down a couple inches, The F-Body pan fits and doesn't hang down but interfers with the drag link without clearancing either the pan or the drag link.
The Speed Engineering headers fit perfectly on my Son In-laws 73 Nova with a 4l80e and they are very cheap considering they are polished stainless and actually built well.

X4, I built my car very much on a budget and I exhausted all options mentioned above and there really isn't a better or cheaper option than the Holley Mounts and their oil pan. I personally used their pan and mounts and fabricated my own trans crossmember.

I have had the Holley LS swap kit since the day they were produced. In fact I had the first production batch of all and helped them figure out a few things.

The pictures on the instructions for the exhaust system are mine, which is pretty cool to see.

All in all, after 6 years of having the car running, everything is still in great condition. I would just buy their engine mounts, oil pan, trans mount and headers. Up to you if you still want the rest.

The Holley 302-2 pan was literally designed with 67-69 F-body and 68-74 X-body fitment as the main design element. It wasn't just meant to be another swap pan. It was made to be THE F/X body swap pan.
