Default 1972 Chevelle backdate LSA T56

This car has been kicking around here for just over a year. I'm getting stir crazy so I need to see what I've taken pics of so far. I sold my last swap before it was even finished. The first guy to come see it fell in love and took it away. This is what I bought to replace it. This is what I found on the old interweb.

This is how I found it

Piled up junk.

I wish the P.O. never tried to fix this thing, it only has 30 thousand miles. It was sandblasted and then got wet. Any little spot of surface rust or any holes were buried in all metal. Even on the frame where the body mounts sit. Not so good welds slathered in all metal filler. There were mouse nests inside of the frame rails in a couple spots, causing rust, that they covered in all metal. I cut it all open and replaced it. While I was in there I narrowed the rear rails and boxed the center of the frame rails with a kit from Hellwig. Turns out I barely took any pics of this work.

I ended up changing the whole floorpan and trunk pan, as there was bad welding and brazing onto the small amount of rust there was. I started to try and get the old repairs out but gave up and cut my losses. It turned out better.

I kept the factory AC because it is totally complete. So the firewall wont be smoothed out. I did keep the O.G. tunnel parts so it was fairly easy to section them in to raise and widen it to fit a T56 and look fairly stock.

I have a few more updates until its at current time. Since I narrowed the rear frame rails, I then widened the inner wheelhouses to suit.

This car had a vinyl top so the window beds were in tough shape. I replaced the quarters as they were cut half off when I got the car. There were 5 doors, extra fenders, used trunk floor and so many other spare parts that came with. The inner structure was all cleaned and blasted before paint/primer. Then new metal.

I had trouble getting all the parts I ordered. A bunch of stuff that I had ordered never came. A few things just weren't available. I used a 69 trunk floor and sectioned in the 70-72 rear bumper mounts. Repaired the door shells so new skins could be installed.

Got the roof skin welded on, along with the upper cowl.

I picked out the best of the parts that came with the car. There were GM fenders for both sides. One was never painted but left outside. The other had been edged out for instalation but had also been left outside to collect leaves and pine straw inside and rust. A ton of elbow grease, a patch panel and some sandblasting got to here.

I spent a bunch of time getting gaps looking good. Way too much time. Also so as the title states, I like the look of a 70 better.

This is about how it looks now. The weather should ,break enough soon so I can get back to work. The plan is T56, LS3 based LSA, and a 12 bolt rear. I bought a 12 bolt housing and have been slowly gathering parts to get it built up. When its warm enough I will finalize the color and paint it. Kindo of partial to the lime green that was on a few of the parts that came with the car. The car itself was white with a black top. Maybe black. Dunno yet.

I like this color, leaning towards it.

Hell of a project. I like the green a lot. It would look amazing with some sort of gold or bronzish colored wheels.

That's exactly what I am thinking. The stock green has gold in it and would look great. Something loke this.

I'd consider factory white. You don't see a lot of white muscle cars. Pair it with a red interior, it'd look really sharp. (Wrong year but you get the idea).

And if you're thinking vinyl top, maybe paint the roof and pillars black to simulate it. Or even carry it over to the hood and trunk to completely two tone it similar to this but with white instead of sliver (again not exact year):

The red pin stripe to break up the two tone would even go along with the red interior.

It would also pair well with white, gold, or bronze rims. White would be work to keep clean, but man does it look sharp especially with rims that have a deep lip.

Nice work on this one so far. Are you planning on keeping the 71-72 rear bumper along with the 70 front end? I’ve always thought that bumper was a nice match for the 70 front.

Subscribed for updates, I also used a 70 front end on my 71 but I also used the 70 rear bumper too. Looking forward to see your progress

I have a 70 rear bumper as well. While a lot of people like the 4 taillights with the 4 headlights, I like a straight 1970 look. Also the interior is white, which on these has only white seats and door panels. The rest is black. Not sure if the white will stay buy its still nice.
