Default MAF location help needed

Need some help getting MAF to work.

Setup: L96 crate engine with GM performance harness. (not relevant but 6L80 with tap shift ;-). in a 80 series Land Cruiser

using 4" aluminum tube with MAF 10" from throttle body. The harness instructions state the MAF must be 10" from the throttle body and at least 3" from upstream bends. the MAF is 6" from upstream 90 bend.

I don't see any reason my MAF readings are low, but the engine won't run right with the MAF plugged in. Will run just fine on speed density mode (default if MAF unplugged).

getting P101 code for low reading. The engine won't stay at idle rpm and jumps around.

I thought I was getting heat soaked from the radiator hose which was running over the top of the air intake tube, but I re-routed the radiator hose and bought a new MAF sensor. still having the same issues.

I am completely bewildered...

Any ideas????

I had this same issue.
I couldn’t use this card style MAF and had to switch to the round flow through type…

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most of those ls3 card style MAFs used with 3.5" tubes normally and not 4"? That maybe why you're reading low on airflow with it installed. I do think they can be tuned for larger diameter tubing.

One thing to check if you are running an "oiled" air filter like a K&N make sure the MAF sensor wires don't have some of the air filter oil on them. New filters some times have a bit too much oil and can be passed down the intake tube to the MAP sensor.
I've used the older style MAP sensors a number of times. Worked great both DBW and DBC.
Pic of my 73 Z28 with a 2012 L92 swap. 4" tube. Not the same as your hot rod but you get the idea.

Look into an air flow straightener. It’s a honey comb looking puck that you rivet into place in the air tube before the MAF. I did this to help with my sporadic readings.

also, if you’re running a card style MAF in a 4” tube, you may need one of these

it comes with 2 inserts that funnel all the incoming air to the MAF.

Have you had a professional tuner dial in your maf curve based off of your driving logs. Once you get the hardware changes punched into your tune, the biggest thing is nailing down the maf curve. Your maf placement is fine. Also, monitor intake air temps (iat). They are monitored through the maf and will tell you a lot about the suitability of your air intake system.

Being in a different size tube you will need to calibrate the MAF.

I agree with the others, your MAF likely isn't dialed in for a 4" tube
